Dieter Pauly

Dieter Pauly (born February 14, 1942 in Rheydt , today a district of Mönchengladbach ) is a former German football referee .

Life

After Pauly had whistled in the second division for three years, he was promoted from the DFB to Bundesliga referee on September 2, 1980 . He became known through the sports photo from 1981, which shows him nose to nose with Toni Schumacher (game Borussia Dortmund against 1. FC Cologne on May 30, 1981).

From 1980 to 1990 Pauly headed exactly 100 Bundesliga games and the 1986 DFB Cup final and made 65 international appearances. During this time he was elected referee of the year by the DFB in 1984/85, 1987/88 and 1989/90.

Pauly was the first DFB referee to be honored with a farewell game. This game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Ajax Amsterdam took place on August 21, 1990 on the Bökelberg .

In 2000 Pauly was elected to the UEFA Referee Observers Committee.
