European Cup Winners' Cup 1978/79

The 1979/80 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 20th edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 34 club teams from 33 countries took part, including defending champions FC Barcelona , 26 national cup winners and 7 defeated cup finalists (Waterford FC, Aris Bonneweg, BSC Young Boys, Dynamo Moscow, Beroe Stara Sagora, FC Twente Enschede and AFC Wrexham). Wrexham came as a finalist of the Welsh Cup 1979, since it was the winner Shrewsbury Town to an English team from the border region. With the exception of Liechtenstein, which had never participated in the competition, all European national associations were represented for the first time in years.

DFB Cup winners Fortuna Düsseldorf from Germany, FDGB Cup winners 1. FC Magdeburg from GDR , ÖFB Cup winners SSW Innsbruck from Austria and Cup finalist BSC Young Boys from Switzerland were at the start.

Valencia FC and Arsenal FC played the final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels on May 14, 1980. Valencia won the game 5-4 on penalties after no goal was scored in 120 minutes of play.

The top scorer was the Argentine Mario Kempes from Valencia CF with 9 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
