PFC Beroe Stara Sagora (officially: PFK Profesionalen futbolen klub Beroe Stara Sagora , Bulgarian Професионален футболен клуб Берое Стара Загора ) is a professional football club from Stara Sagora , Bulgaria . The club currently plays in the Bulgarian first division .

Club history

The association was founded in 1916 in the city of Stara Sagora, in the center of Bulgaria. In 1986 Beroe, mostly referred to as "The Greens", won the Bulgarian championship. The club also took part in the UEFA Cup , the European Cup Winners 'Cup and the European National Champions' Cup. One of the highlights was the 1-0 win at home against Juventus Turin in October 1979, although after the 0-1 defeat in the second leg in regular time and two more goals by Turin, they just failed in extra time .

Beroe took part in the UEFA Cup for the first time in the 1972/73 season and surprisingly prevailed in the first encounter with 7-0 and 3-1 against FK Austria Wien . In the following season, the club failed in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the quarter-finals against eventual winners 1. FC Magdeburg after they had previously defeated Athletic Bilbao . It was followed in the same year the relegation to the second division, but then also the immediate promotion.

After the championship in 1986 the problems increased in the club, and when Beroe had to relegate after the 1994/95 season, a decline followed to the fourth division. The month of April 2003 marked a new beginning when a new president was installed and the budget could be secured with a new economic concept. Since the club enjoyed great overall popularity in the city, which was expressed in a large audience, a further development took place, which reached its preliminary climax with the return to the first division at the end of the 2003/04 season. In the following first season in the top division, the club managed to stay in relegation with seventh place relatively safely.

The club's current coach is the 35-time Bulgarian national player Ilian Iliew, who played three games at the 1998 World Cup in France .
