Petar Chubchev ( Bulgarian Петър Хубчев , English transcription: Petar Houbchev ; born February 26, 1964 in Glojene , Lovech Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian football player and coach. As a player, he was part of the Bulgarian national team , which reached the semi-finals at the 1994 World Cup and took part in the 1996 European Championship .

career

Chubchev began his career as a central defender at Osam Lovech (now Litex Lovech ). He was called up to the national team while he was still playing in the Bulgarian second division ( B Grupa ). After 248 games for Osam, he was signed by Levski Sofia in 1989 . He stayed in Sofia until 1994, where he celebrated two championships and two cup wins. In 1992, Petar Chubchev was second in the election for Bulgaria's Footballer of the Year behind Emil Kostadinov.

After the Bulgarians' success at the 1994 World Cup, he moved to Hamburger SV , where he became captain. In 1997 he went to Eintracht Frankfurt , where he ended his career at the age of 38 after playing 128 Bundesliga games with two goals and 44 second division games with two goals.

In 2002, Petar Chubchev became assistant coach of the Bulgarian national team under coach Plamen Markov and qualified for the Euro 2004 . He then remained under the new coach Christo Stoitschkow assistant and worked briefly in 2005 as head coach at Slavia Sofia , but dissolved his contract after the first half of the season. From January 2006 to December 2007 he was U-23 head coach at Eintracht Frankfurt. In the first year he saved the U-23 from relegation and in the following year managed to place the team on a promotion place for the new regional league. He then signed with the second team at VfL Wolfsburg . There he was signed by the then sports director and trainer Felix Magath , who was his trainer at Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt. In the summer of 2008, however, he was relieved of his duties in Wolfsburg and given a new role as a scout.

In the period from 2009 to 2011, Chubchev was the coach of the Bulgarian second division club Chernomorets Pomorie . During this time he was able to show the team the cup final (2010) and promotion to the first Bulgarian football league (A Grupa; 2010/11 season) as successes. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he took over the coaching position at Botew Plovdiv . In the spring of 2012, Chubchev became sports director of PFC Beroe Stara Sagora. In October of the same year he also took over the coaching position at Beroe Stara Sagora and in May 2013 won the Bulgarian Cup in the final against Levski Sofia. In July he was also able to win the Bulgarian Super Cup against the Bulgarian champion Ludogorez Razgrad.

From 2016 to 2019 he was the coach of the Bulgarian national soccer team.
