Rudolf "Rudi" Vytlačil (born February 9, 1912 in Schwechat , † June 1, 1977 ) was a Lower Austrian soccer player and later soccer coach, who celebrated his greatest successes in Austria , Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria .
Career
Players in Schwechat, Vienna and Prague
Rudi Vytlačil was an enthusiastic athlete even in his youth, but active as a track and field athlete. He only came into contact with football during a holiday in Salzburg and soon after his return to his home town of Schwechat, he joined the youth team at the local Phönix club . The fast Rudi Vytlačil was brought into the running position of the Phönix Schwechat fighting team after only four missions with the youth. At the age of eighteen, the soccer player moved to SK Slovan Wien in nearby Favoriten in 1930 , which played in the highest Austrian league . At Slovan, Rudi Vytlačil was a regular player as a winger in his first season and in 1932, with Rapid, one of the leading clubs in the league at the time.
At the Hütteldorfern team he played with Franz Weselik , Franz Binder and Pepi Bican , among others , and narrowly missed winning the title twice as runner-up. In the 1933/34 , however, the winger suffered from severe sciatica , which almost ended his career. After surviving this a year later, he tried again on the soccer field, again in favorites at the small top division club, the Favoritner Sportclub . Here it was able to quickly find its way back to its old form and even surpass it. He was soon called up for the B national team and should also play in the A team. But before that came about, the Prague Slavia offered 100,000 schillings for Vytlačil, an unbelievably high offer for the small club at the time, which the club immediately accepted.
In Prague, Rudolf Vytlačil was able to win the Czechoslovak championship in 1937 and met in the same year on his old player colleague Pepi Bican from Rapid, who also moved to Slavia. The club started as champions in the Mitropapokal in 1938 , which Slavia won for the first time. The final against Ferencváros ended 2-2 in Prague and 2-0 in Budapest for Slavia - Vytlačil had shot his club in the front in the second leg, Bican was top scorer with 10 goals.
World Cup final and series champion as coach
After finishing his active career, Rudolf Vytlačil tried his hand at coaching in Czechoslovakia. He coached Baník Ostrava , Tatran Teplice and TJ Gottwaldow , among others , before he was appointed national coach to Prague by the association in 1957. At first he led the training together with Karel Kolský , but soon the sole responsibility was passed to Rudolf Vytlačil. One of the most successful eras of the Czechoslovak national team fell during his coaching time until 1963 . In 1960, the last European Cup played could be received, at the European Championship in the same year , the team finished third after a 5-4 victory in the small final over hosts France . The highlight is undoubtedly the participation in the 1962 World Cup in Chile, where Vytlačil's team only lost 3-1 to Brazil in the final . He then supervised the Olympic selection for Tokyo in 1964 , which won the silver medal.
In November 1964, Rudolf Vytlačil was brought to Bulgaria as a coach, where he should look after both the national team and Levski Sofia . With Bulgaria succeeded in the qualifying round for the soccer world championship in 1966 , with Levski Sofia winning the championship in 1965. After a somewhat disappointing final round and the preliminary round in England, Rudolf Vytlačil took his former club SK Rapid Vienna on January 4, 1966 with the beginning February 15, 1966. With Rapid he won the Austrian championship in 1966/67 and 1967/68 and reached the quarter-finals in the European Cup , with Real Madrid being thrown out of the competition. After Rudolf Vytlačil fell seriously ill at the end of 1968, he had to resign as a coach. It was not until 1970 that he was able to get back on a season with Levski Sofia and still achieved the Bulgarian Cup victory there.
