The Austrian Football Championship 1966/67 was organized by the Austrian Football Association. The regional leagues east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.
First performance level - national league
Before the season
- On July 8th, the federal board of the ÖFB decided to approve the proposal of the national league and to leave the 1st Wiener Neustädter SC in the top division. It was still about the fact that promoted SC Wacker Wien had to name a full-time coach by July 20, otherwise SV Austria Salzburg would have received the license, but with Otto Walzhofer the Meidlingers could name a corresponding person.
- Similar to FK Austria Wien (please see the comments in the article on 1965/66), Wacker Wien announced that this club had signed a patronage agreement with the drugstore wholesaler Willi Gerstenberger, according to which the dress will be a badge with a company advertisement ("Creme Lanol") wear.
General
The championship in the national league was contested with 14 teams, each of which met twice during the entire season. Rapid was able to become Austrian football champion for the 24th time in the season , while defending champion Admira landed in seventh place. The Hütteldorfer's last championship win was in 1964. The last three teams in the table had to be relegated. This affected the SC Wacker Vienna, 1. Wiener Neustädter SC and the Kapfenberger SV, which were therefore no longer represented in the first division in the next season. These teams were replaced by the three champions of the regional leagues WSG Radenthein (center), SC Eisenstadt (east) and SV Austria Salzburg (west). As Austrian champions, Rapid was able to qualify for the 1968 European Cup , where the club made it to the round of 16. Cup winner Austria (by drawing of lots) was allowed to take part in the European Cup of Cup winners in 1968 , where he was eliminated in the first round. The Wiener Sport-Club represented Austrian football in the 1968 UEFA Cup (Messestädte-Pokal) , but also failed there in Round 1.
3-0 criminal certification withdrawn
- The match between Kapfenberger SV and SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz , scheduled for Sunday, November 20, 1966 at 2 p.m. in the 10th autumn round, did not take place due to the Bregenz team not appearing, so it was canceled (referee Tomandl was assigned). The Vorarlbergers had flown from Munich to Graz in a charter plane , with the machine initially suffering from engine damage and then also being banned from landing in Graz due to excessive fog. This was a precedent for the relevant association bodies. Up to now, »force majeure« was the reason for not showing up, e.g. B. a failure of public transport (railway accident, route interrupted by avalanches or floods, possibly an engine failure in a bus). Many years ago - when arriving with a private vehicle and had a defect - the non-appearance was certified 3-0 for the hosts. Questions arose as to whether the charter plane was considered a »public means of transport« and whether the Bregenz residents might have acted negligently when they were on the road on the day of the match and not 24 hours beforehand. On December 6th, the responsible authority decided a 3-0 for the home team, but Bregenz appealed. This was then granted, the Bregenz residents argued and a. with the fact that in these days traveling by plane, especially with the greater distance from Vorarlberg to Styria, is no longer unusual. On February 26, 1967, the game was made up for, which ended all further discussions with the Styrian 1-0 victory (and in any case this result was not relevant for the championship outcome).
Increase requests
In an ÖFB federal board meeting on April 14, an increase was rejected. The application of the Styrian Association (StFV) for 16 clubs did not receive the necessary support. On the part of the ÖFB it was said that the lack of appointments and the extensive lack of covered grandstands for games in winter do not allow any expansion, and that the dates for international encounters (Easter, Christmas) will be retained. In addition, 16 national league clubs would dilute the already modest level of performance. While the supporters of the increase had valid reasons, there was no consensus among them
Championship Finals
Rapid Vienna, one point behind leader FC Wacker Innsbruck after the autumn with 19 points , was able to intercept the Tyroleans thanks to the better goal difference (but also the better goal difference, which was not yet applicable at the time), with the Rapidler in the final round on 24 June 3: 1 at SK Admira Vienna, the Innsbruckers won the West Derby against Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz 5: 1. However, the coefficient for the goal difference was only 0.7 better, the decisive factor against Innsbruck was - after the 3-0 interim lead of the home team - the (as the media describe) "carelessly captured" goal by Heinz Pienz in the 26th minute, added two more exclusions from the Tyroleans and that of Bregenz-Schützen Pienz by referee Erich Linemayr .
But also in the relegation the third from bottom SK Wacker Wien failed because of the poor goal difference to SK Sturm Graz (28:50 versus 32:47); the smooth 6: 1 over fixed relegated Kapfenberger SV no longer helped .
statistics
The three relegated were already in the last three places after the autumn, but in the order Kapfenberg 8 points ahead of Wacker Wien and Wiener Neustadt with 7 points each, but before that Sturm Graz (10) and the GAK (9) were also at great risk .
In the spring table, in which Rapid was ahead of Innsbruck (20) with 22 points, Wacker Vienna appeared to be 8th with 11 points, but this was not enough. The last three were Sturm Graz and Wiener Neustadt (8 each) before Kapfenberg with only 3 points left.
The best home team was Wacker Innsbruck (23) ahead of Rapid (21) and LASK (20), Wacker Wien and Vienna with 13 each ahead of Wiener Neustadt (10) and Kapfenberg (9) formed the final quartet.
Away was Rapid (20) ahead of Innsbruck (18) and Austria (17) - on the other side there were several poor scores, starting in ranks 10 to 12 with 5 points each for Austria Klagenfurt, Wiener Neustadt and Wacker Wien; Sturm Graz had 4 points - and Kapfenberg only had two draws and thus 2 points.
The number of spectators had increased by 96,000 to 1,150,000 compared to the previous year - Rapid had the most visitors with 155,000, ahead of Innsbruck with 133,000. The overall average of all 182 encounters was 5,260 visitors.
There were 93 home and 54 away wins and 35 draws (13 of them goalless, and none were more than 2: 2), which meant 310: 212 goals in favor of the hosts. The 68 penalties (56 of them for foul play) seemed to be influenced by the home advantage, because there was a ratio of 69:19.
26 players were excluded (there were 29 in 1965/66 - another comparison: in the highest league in Switzerland with the same number of clubs, there were only six exclusions; in the German Bundesliga with 18 clubs there were 14), whereby Kapfenberg, the Sport-Club, LASK and Vienna were spared. Black and white Bregenz and Austria Klagenfurt had the most exclusions with six each. Only 5 of those shot out came from the home club.
There were 68 penalties (56 of which were for rough or dangerous play).
For the sixth time the title was awarded on the basis of the better goal difference, this was against relegation for the second time - this time Sturm Graz profited; In 1952/53, VfB Union Mödling was third from bottom with 19 points and 35:62 for the same reason (LASK had 53:59, FC Wien 38:61).

Regional league middle
In the Regionalliga Mitte, WSG Radenthein, which had narrowly escaped relegation in the previous year, won the championship title. In addition to the supplementary games required due to the weather, the Klagenfurt AC, known as KAC, also had to play a replay against Vorwärts Steyr on September 11th. The match at that time had ended 5: 2 for the Carinthians, but the referee made a decisive rule error when he forbade the substitute goalkeeper, who was supposed to replace the injured first keeper, to participate at Steyr. There was a Steyr protest, also a KAC counter-protest, ultimately the repeat match on March 26, 1967 - and another KAC victory with a 4-1 victory. It was strange that the return game Amateure Steyr against KAC (3: 1) was played on March 19, one week before the repeat match. In addition to the KAC with 2 supplementary games, six other clubs each had one open.
In the autumn table, Radenthein led (8 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats, 37:10, 18 points) ahead of VÖEST (6/4/2, 33:18, 16) and Vorwärts Steyr (7/1/3, 20:11 , 15). Many teams were in danger of relegation, so Amateure Steyr only had 12 points in 5th place - and the last St. Valentin just 3 less, i.e. 9! The other current relegation places were also taken by Wels with 10 and SVS Linz with 9 points; the KAC appeared in 11th place with 10 points - but with only 10 matches. In addition to the aforementioned replay against Vorwärts Steyr, the one against Hertha Wels and Amateure Steyr (both away) was missing. These brought a 2: 4 in Wels on February 19 and a 1: 1 in Steyr on February 26, so that, in retrospect, the athletes would have been placed 6th in terms of lost points.
It was already at the championship draw by the responsible bodies with regard to the two works teams of Radenthein and Ferndorf, referred to as "brothers", who were under the wing of the "Austrian-American Heraklith-AG", to set up their encounter for the first round was taken to "prevent an auxiliary expedition in the finish", as it was interpreted by the »Kärntner Tageszeitung«. The newspaper writer was of the opinion, however, that "to those who are familiar with the situation, this precautionary measure seems greatly exaggerated ... because a seldom fierce rivalry reigns on the lawn." - The results were 0-0 in Ferndorf on August 28th and a 2-0 for Radenthein in the Radenthein city stadium on March 4th.

Third performance level
Regional League Burgenland
In Burgenland, SC Pinkafeld celebrated the championship title. Unfortunately, there is no information about the end of the table this season.
Regional League Carinthia
In Carinthia, the SC Magdalen from the west of the city of Villach fixed the championship title and thus for the first time promotion to the regional league. For the Magdalener it was a kind of compensation for the preseason when they had become autumn champion, but in the end Ferndorf had won the title, and also a "déjà vu" to 1961/62, when they had also become autumn champion, but the local rival Villacher SV had won the title. This time the ASV Klagenfurt led initially, then Rapid Lienz took over the lead, with 9 wins and 2 defeats (25:16; 18 points) became autumn champions ahead of the Magdalener (7/3/1; 24: 7; 17) and the ASV ( 7/3/1; 20:10; 17). The Lienz team held the top position until the 15th round, after which they lost 0-1 at Wolfsberger AC on May 4th - after the 17th round, ASV was 4 points behind the now top duo MSC and Rapid. In the 18th round the next defeat came from Lienz (0: 1 at Admira) - and after that there was a "disappointing 0-0 home" against Klagenfurt police from the East Tyrolean perspective. The final decision was made on June 3rd with the Magdalen 3-0 home against Lienzer.
Relegation area: With only 1 point, Klagenfurt police were beaten at the end of autumn at the end of the table, but the police were able to save themselves with a strong second half. Admira Villach and Sachsenburg were at risk with six and five points respectively. This was the order in which both teams went to the last round, whereby the Admira 2-1 win over Master Magdalen was a big sensation, but according to newspaper reports it was not a gift from the city rival (rock-hard match, 2 exclusions against Admira).
