history

The Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium is a relatively young high school. The roots go back to the rule of the National Socialists when the high school for boys at the water tower was set up in the direct vicinity of the water tower . During the air raids by the Allies in World War II , the buildings as well as large parts of the city of Münster were destroyed. In 1946, the direct predecessor school, Münsterschen Alternative Oberschule Sendenhorst, was founded with the support of the English and was temporarily located in Sendenhorst. In 1949, the school, now in the form of a grammar school, was named after Johann Wilhelm Hittorf , an honorary citizen of the city of Münster, who taught at the royal academy there for 37 years as a professor of physics and chemistry and is considered a pioneer of modern physics. After teaching took place provisionally for more than ten years in cramped rooms in the Johannis School, the move to the newly built building at the water tower in the Geistviertel took place in 1960. In the same year the city of Münster commissioned the Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium with the introduction of an advanced branch for secondary school graduates.

Programmatic focus

Due to the past of the establishment, the Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium has a reputation as a boys' gymnasium with a natural science orientation, although there have been changes in the teaching staff and program in the meantime. Almost half of the pupils taught are girls and illustrate the tradition of coeducational teaching of the post-war years, when both boys and girls were taught equally at the short-term location in Sendenhorst . In 1946 this school was an extremely unusual institution in the school landscape.

Another focus is the consciously democratic management style of the school management. It belongs to the tradition of the grammar school and is intended to promote a high level of collegial willingness to cooperate.

Since the 2002/03 school year, the Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium has been taking part in the “Independent School” project, which is initially set to run for six years. This project is based on cooperation agreements with the city of Münster and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In March 2006, the Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium started a cooperation with the Musikschule Münster eV , which since then has been offering instrumental and vocal lessons in the classrooms as a "music school in the school", thus expanding the school's afternoon program. Workshops with internationally known jazz musicians such as Bill Evans , Hiram Bullock and Bob Mintzer could be offered through the music school in the Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium .

Awards

The Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium received special awards in the field of social sciences. By 2001 it had won the prize awarded by the Federal President in the German History school competition seven times . Together with a high school in Mainz , it forms the top group.

On May 7, 2007, the school was awarded the “Seal of Approval for Individual Support” by Minister Barbara Sommer . The Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium is the first school in Münster to be awarded this certificate for its extensive measures to promote particularly talented students, but also for those with learning difficulties.

On August 25, 2008, the Ministry for Schools and Further Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia honored the special achievements of the Wilhelm-Hittorf-Gymnasium in the linguistic area and in the treatment of Europe-oriented content by being certified as a European school.
