Water tower in the ghost district

The water tower "In the Spirit" is a water tower of the Stadtwerke Münster and is in the spirit quarter of Munster .

history

The tower was built in 1900 or 1901 to 1903 on the Geist in an open field before the Geistviertel was planned and built, and it reaches a height of almost 60 meters. The water tower was put into operation on July 1, 1903 and replaced the Buddenturm , which it had five times greater capacity.

Stadtwerke Münster used the tower to store drinking water and to equalize pressure until 2017. It is not open to the public.

architecture

Architectural design in the neo-Romanesque style and construction were in the hands of Stadtbaurat Merkens and Stadtbaumeister Drießen. A riveted steel tank with a capacity of 2,500 m³ is hidden behind its striking facade. With its green copper roof, it has become the landmark of the Geistviertel. A special feature is the servants' apartment in the water tower.

During the Second World War, the tower was camouflaged as a church with a dummy extension and so remained undamaged.
