Rose Royce
Rose Royce was an American Soul -, radio - and disco - band whose biggest hit to the 1976 Single Car Wash is.
biography
The band was from Motown - music producer and songwriter Norman Whitfield (best known for his work on with The Temptations ) together. The group, initially consisting of eight members, was founded in Los Angeles in the early 1970s under the name Total Concept Unlimited and performed as a backing band for Edwin Starr and as a studio musician for The Temptations and The Undisputed Truth . Members were Kenji Brown, Kenny Copeland, Freddie Dunn, Henry Garner, Lequient "Duke" Jobe, Michael Moore, Victor Nix and Gerrai Santiel.
In 1976 the singer Gwen Dickey was added and the band name was changed to Rose Royce. This was followed by the soundtrack produced by Whitfield for the musical comedy Car Wash, the theme song of which became the group's greatest success. The single reached number 1 in the US , top 10 placements in Switzerland and Great Britain and the top 20 in Austria and Germany . By 1977 five more singles climbed into the American and / or English charts, including just a top 10 hit with I Wanna Get Next to You (1977, US number 10). The album was awarded a Grammy for best soundtrack composition .
1978 turned out to be the most successful year for Rose Royce in the UK. At the beginning of the year, Wishing on a Star climbed to number 3 on the singles chart, followed by It Makes You Feel Like Dancin ' in May , which reached number 16, and finally Love Don't Live Here Anymore even climbed to number 2. Five in the fall further singles were placed in the UK charts until 1985.
A new edition of Car Wash (with Is It Love You're After as B-side) made it to number 20 in England in 1988. It wasn't until 10 years later, in 1998, that a remix of Car Wash was the last hit parade for Rose Royce. In the same year Gwen Dickey released a new version of Wishing on a Star together with Jay-Z , which was number 13 in the UK charts and number 56 in Germany.
