Pushing Daisies (allusion to the English phrase “ pushing up the daisies ”, loosely translated: “ pushing up the daisies ”) is an American television series by Bryan Fuller , which was produced from 2007 to 2008 and broadcast on ABC . It was first broadcast on October 3, 2007.
The series is described as a romantic, forensic fairy tale in which the main character Ned Dead can be brought back to life with one touch. ProSieben has secured the rights in Germany : the first season was broadcast from October 22 to December 10, 2008, and from January 14, 2009 to March 11, 2009, the second season was shown on Wednesdays in the evening program. The last three episodes of the second season were broadcast as world premieres in Germany, since the series was discontinued in the USA during the second season and the broadcast was interrupted; the English-language first broadcast followed a short time later in Great Britain.
content
The well-mannered Ned ( Lee Pace ) is able to bring dead things back to life. He discovered this ability as a child. As an adult he decides to use his gift for good: not only by making spoiled fruit fresh and edible again and thus being able to offer wonderful cakes in his café “The Pie Hole”, but also by telling the detective Emerson ( Chi McBride ) helps solve murder cases. He brings the murder victims back to life briefly with one touch so that they can name their murderer. In return, the two collect the rewards that are offered to the perpetrators.
Ned's life becomes more complicated when his childhood love Charlotte "Chuck" Charles ( Anna Friel ) is murdered, because his gift has two catches: If he brings someone back to life with one touch, he dies again with the second touch, and for good. And if it brings someone back to life with one touch and does not send them back to their death after a minute at the latest, a similar living being must die nearby. Even so, Ned decides to keep Chuck alive. However, if he ever touches her a second time, she will die and never be able to come back to life. Nevertheless, both fall in love again. This leads to some complicated situations and rules, the latter to enable the two to live together.

The series was synchronized at Cinephon GmbH based on dialogue books by Kathrin Kabbathas and directed by Martin Schmitz (season 1) and Ulrike Lau (season 2).

background
Conception
The basic idea of a man who can bring the dead back to life for a short time was originally intended by Bryan Fuller for his first own series " Dead Like Me ". "Dead Like Me" is about a young woman named Georgia, called George, who is killed by a toilet seat falling out of space and as a result becomes a soul collector. Fuller, who left the series in the middle of the first season due to differences with the studio, originally intended that George would meet someone who could bring the dead back to life and thus "kidnap" the souls that George had collected. He would have touched her, George could have returned to her family for a while and then later would have become a soul collector again through a second touch. Fuller had also imagined to create an offshoot of "Dead Like Me" with this idea and this character, but he could no longer implement his ideas due to his early exit. He then proposed this idea to Warner Brothers - this eventually resulted in “Pushing Daisies”.
production
On May 11, 2007, the series was picked up by the American television station ABC for the fall 2007 program and 13 episodes were ordered. On October 23, 2007, the broadcaster ordered 9 additional episodes, making the first season 22 episodes. Due to the 2007 writers' strike , which lasted from November 2007 to mid-February 2008, production of the series was canceled after the ninth episode. After the strike ended, ABC decided not to have any more episodes produced for the first season as it would have been too costly to advertise the series for just four to five additional episodes with a large advertising campaign. On February 11, 2008, ABC announced that it had ordered a second season for the fall 2008 program and that the authors would resume their work in mid-June. For the second season, 13 episodes were ordered. On November 20, 2008, ABC announced that production of the series had ceased. This means that "Pushing Daisies" ended after a total of 22 episodes.
reception
Reviews
Even before it even started, “Pushing Daisies” was well received by American critics. Michael Ausiello from TV Guide said that "ABC [with the series] would have found the next" Lost "". Matt Roush, also from TV Guide, called the series his personal favorite pilot of the 2007/2008 TV season. In his opinion, there is "nothing like it on television, nothing that looks, sounds or is as magical as 'Pushing Daisies'". New York Magazine described the show as "fun, resourceful and intelligent". USA Today also named Pushing Daisies the best new series of the season. The Süddeutsche Zeitung says: "Pushing Daisies ... breaks the tried and tested conventions with naive coquetry and a colorful world of images."
Audience ratings
The first episode of the series, which was heavily promoted by ABC, was able to attract 13.03 million viewers on October 3, 2007, making it the fourth most popular series premiere in autumn 2007, after “ Samantha Who? "," Private Practice "and" Bionic Woman ". Pushing Daisies was the most successful show on the slot that evening, both in terms of ratings and the values of the target group. In the weeks that followed, Pushing Daisies increasingly lost viewers. On average, the first season of the series drew 9.46 million American viewers in front of the screens.
In Germany, the first episode was watched by 2.63 million viewers, which corresponds to a market share of 8.8 percent. Pushing Daisies did better than Desperate Housewives earlier at 8:15 p.m.
