Swoosie Kurtz (born September 6, 1944 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American actress .

Life

Swoosie Kurtz's mother Margo was a writer and her father Frank Kurtz was a colonel in the United States Air Force . She got her first name after the B-17 bomber "Swoose Goose" flown by her father in the Philippines during the Pacific War . Kurtz studied at the University of Southern California and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art . She starred in several Broadway - plays , for which they, among others, with the Tony Award was awarded. She was awarded an Emmy for her role in the television series Carol & Company (1990) .

Kurtz played in numerous films such as Baja Oklahoma (1988), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe . In the film Dangerous Liaisons (1988) she starred alongside Glenn Close , John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer in the film Stanley & Iris (1990) next to Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro . Since September 2010 she has played the role of Joyce Flynn in the series Mike & Molly .
