Baby Business (Original title: Citizen Ruth ) is an American comedy film from 1996 . Directed by Alexander Payne , who also wrote the script with Jim Taylor .
action
The drug addict Ruth Stoops has four children who were placed with foster families by the authorities. She is arrested again for a drug offense and learns she is pregnant. A judge advises her to have an abortion . Stoops opts for it and ends up at the wrong clinic that anti-abortionists lead into contact with pregnant women.
Stoops first lives with the Stoney family and later with the lesbian Diane Siegler and Rachel. It accepts donations from abortion opponents as well as from abortion advocates. Stoops has a miscarriage and then demands more money from one of the abortion advocates.
Reviews
Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times on December 13, 1996 that the "outrageously hilarious" comedy proves that the subject of abortion can be quite funny. Thanks to the “hilarious” portrayal of the “outstanding comedian” Laura Dern, one could like the character she played. The "skilful" direction ensures fun for anti-abortionists as well as for supporters.
The lexicon of international films wrote: “Located between real satire and mocking didactic play, the film sketches the two groups with bold brushstrokes and tries to show that no bridge can be built between drug addiction and the bourgeois world. The strengths of the film lie in the distance it keeps to its characters and the convincing leading actress. "
