action
Elizabeth King, the wife of attorney Matt King, was in a serious motorboat accident and has been in a coma ever since. Matt, descendant of a wealthy Hawaiian king's daughter, watches over his wife's bed. The doctor explains to him that there is no longer any hope and that according to Elizabeth's living will, he must discontinue life support.
In addition to this stressful situation, Matt and his relatives are about to make a decision to sell their family's inherited land on Kaua'i . He has been the property trustee since the death of his parents.
At the beginning, Matt has significant difficulties finding his way into his new role as a single father. His ten-year-old daughter Scottie puts him to the test, and his 17-year-old daughter Alexandra, who lives in boarding school, drinks too much and is dismissive of her father. They go to Elizabeth's parents: the father, a rumbling reactionary, blacks out Alexandra's friend Sid after he made fun of his demented wife, who mistook her daughter for Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth's father makes it very clear to Matt that he rejects him. Matt also finds it hard to bear the presence of Alexandra's friend Sid. After an argument with Matt, Alexandra accuses him of not having noticed anything, not even his wife's affair. Matt confronts Elizabeth's best friend. This confirms the affair, and her husband reveals that it was a man named Brian Speer. Matt and his children find out that Brian Speer is a real estate agent who would make money selling the land on Kaua'i. They find him with his wife and two sons in a vacation home on Kaua'i and look for him there under the pretext that he should say goodbye to his former lover.
Shortly thereafter, the Kings family reunion takes place, who decide on the sale of the land. The family decided by a large majority in favor of the Hawaiian bidder, from which Brian Speer would also benefit. But in the end Matt refuses to sign the contract. He wants to preserve the heavenly piece of island for the family and the general public and prevent it from being plastered with hotels and supermarkets. One of the cousins announces that the family will sue him.
Elizabeth's condition continues to deteriorate after the equipment is turned off. Matt, Scottie and Alexandra as well as the grandfather and the demented grandmother say goodbye to her. Matt and Alexandra do not spare her serious accusations. Someone else says goodbye to her - Brian's wife Julie. She confronted her husband about his affair, but he refused to say goodbye to Elizabeth. Julie tearfully accuses Elizabeth of ruining her marriage - but at the same time forgives her. Matt thanks her and says goodbye to her.
After Elizabeth dies, Matt and his daughters say goodbye to her at sea by scattering their ashes in the water near Waikiki . One shot shows the boat and the leis floating on the water from below from the "view" of the ashes. At the end of the day, father and daughters sit on the sofa eating ice cream in front of the television, which is showing The Journey of the Penguins , and cover themselves with the quilt for Elizabeth's deathbed.

criticism
“A moving, sad and cheerful film about the rediscovery of family values, which impressively describes the father's complex soul situation. He confidently counteracts the tragic with the comic and always finds the right tone to save the story from obvious sentimental traps. "
“Against the wonderful backdrop of the beaches of Hawaii, Alexander Payne [...] staged a wonderful tragic comedy, nominated for five Academy Awards, which is masterfully entertaining, especially thanks to the excellent play by George Clooney. With a very sensitive feeling for funny and tragic details in interpersonal coexistence, Payne succeeds, as in his previous works, in quickly pulling his audience under the spell of history. "
“The truth that everything boils down to here is just like that in Douglas Sirk's ' What Heaven Permits ', one of the most beautiful melodramas of all. There it says: 'Should everyone live according to their rhythm, according to the melody that only they can hear.' And the Hawaiian guitars cheer blissfully. "
