Makana ( English Makana Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Sarah Baartman district of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa . The seat of the local government is in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown). Mayor is Mzukisi Mpahlwa.
The community is named after the Xhosa warrior and prophet Makana (also Makanda), who led a massive attack against the British garrison at Grahamstown in 1819 during the border wars .
Makhanda is the seat of the diocese of the same name of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and one of the oldest universities in the country, Rhodes University .

In 2011 the community had 80,390 inhabitants. 78% of these were black, 12.1% colored and 8.7% white. The mother tongues were 66.5% IsiXhosa , 13.8% Afrikaans and 9.7% English.
