Sundays River Valley ( English Sundays River Valley Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Sarah Baartman district of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa . The local government office is in Kirkwood . Mayoress is Nombulelo Bixa.

The municipality name is a translation of the Dutch Zondags Rivier . A Voortrekker command under the Boer leader Andries Pretorius stopped here on a Sunday (December 8, 1838).

In 2011 the community had 54,504 inhabitants. 71.8% of this were black, 21.4% colored and 5.9% white. The mother tongues were 62.1% IsiXhosa , 27% Afrikaans and 3.3% English.
