The 2012 Golden Globe Awards were presented for the 69th time on January 15, 2012 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), an association of international film journalists. The award was given in a total of 25 categories for outstanding performance in the fields of film and television . The award ceremony took place at a gala dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills .

For the third year in a row, after the awards ceremony in 2010 and the one in 2011 , comedian Ricky Gervais was the moderator .

Favorites

The nominations in the 25 categories were announced on December 15, 2011. The actors Woody Harrelson , Sofía Vergara , Gerard Butler and Rashida Jones took on this task . Films and television programs that were shown for the first time between January 1 and December 31, 2011 were taken into account. Foreign language films had to have premiered in the country of origin between November 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011.

With a total of six nominations was the The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius as a favorite in the field of film. The silent film homage lived up to its favorite status and won three awards (Best Comedy / Musical, Best Actor in a Comedy / Musical - Jean Dujardin , Best Film Music). Two Golden Globe Awards went to Alexander Payne's tragic comedy The Descendants - Family and Other Affairs (Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama - George Clooney ), which had received five nominations. The racism drama The Help by Tate Taylor , which was honored in the supporting actress category ( Octavia Spencer ), had the same number of mentions . Woody Allen's romantic comedy Midnight in Paris , nominated four times , won the screenplay award. The political thriller The Ides of March - Days of Betrayal by George Clooney and Bennett Miller's sports drama The Art of Winning - Moneyball came in for four nominations each but no award .

Ryan Gosling ( The Ides of March , Crazy, Stupid, Love. ) And Kate Winslet ( The God of Carnage , Mildred Pierce ) were each nominated for their acting performances in two categories. Winslet won the award for Mildred Pierce . The actress Glenn Close ( Albert Nobbs ), who also contributed the text for the film song, also received two nominations . The German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender , who had already received an award at the Venice Film Festival for his role in Shame , was nominated in the category Best Actor - Drama , but was left behind compared to George Clooney.

In the television division, the Emmy- winning series Downton Abbey and the multi-part television series Mildred Pierce received the most nominations (four each). The television series Homeland was awarded twice (Best TV Series - Drama, Best Series Lead Actress in a Drama - Claire Danes ).
