In 1972 Macy, Mamet and Schachter moved to Chicago and founded the St. Nicholas Theater there . Two years later, Macy went to Los Angeles , where he hoped for a breakthrough as a film actor, but there were no major role offers for the time being. Instead, he celebrated great success as a theater director in New York from 1980 and received a Tony Award together with the ensemble for the revival of Thornton Wilder's play Our Little City . Hollywood also noticed him in the early 1990s . After a minor role in The Client (1994), he was nominated for Best Leading Actor for the 1995 Independent Spirit Award for his performance in Oleanna (1994) . This was followed by Mr. Holland's Opus (1995), Murder in the First (1995) and Fargo (1996) by the Coen brothers, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor .

In the years that followed, Macy took on supporting roles in such films as Boogie Nights , Air Force One , Psycho , Wag the Dog , Civil Trial , Pleasantville, Too Good To Be True , Magnolia, and Jurassic Park III . Since 2011 he can be seen in the role of Frank Gallagher in the successful series Shameless , for which he has already received several television awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award .

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Macy has also appeared as a screenwriter. As such, he was mainly involved in television productions. In 1988 he made his directorial debut with a television film. His second feature film, Rudderless, followed in 2014, and The Layover was released in 2017 . Since 1997 he has been married to actress Felicity Huffman , with whom he has two daughters.
