Blood Father is a French thriller written by Jean-François Richet based on the 2005 book Blood Father: A Novel by Peter Craig and premiered on May 21, 2016 at the Cannes Film Festival . The film was released in selected US cinemas on August 12, 2016.

John Link is a grizzled ex-convict who was paroled for a violent crime after a long sentence and now lives in a rickety trailer and works as a tattoo artist. His life takes a sudden turn when one day his biological daughter Lydia shows up with him. It's been three years since Lydia Carson, who came from a privileged home, ran away from her Los Angeles home. The now 17-year-old had met an older man, who earned his money with shady methods. After she had to flee from this one, she now needs the help of her birth father.

The film is based on the book Blood Father: A Novel by Peter Craig, who, in addition to Andrea Berloff, also worked on the script for the film . Craig is the son of actress Sally Field and was previously on the scripts for the film The Town and the films of the two Mockingjay novels of Tribute von Panem involved series. Berloff last worked on the script for Straight Outta Compton . The French director Jean-François Richet directed the film .
On March 28, 2014, it was announced that Mel Gibson would be directing the lead role of John Link and Jean-François Richet . It was Gibson's first major film since The Beaver in 2011. On April 24, 2014, with Erin Moriarty as Gibson's daughter Lydia, another main cast of the film was announced. Moriarty was previously known mostly from TV series, for example from Marvel's Jessica Jones . On June 6, 2014, the cast of Joker with Richard Cabral , the brutal enforcer of the Mexican mafia, became known . On June 14, 2014, William H. Macy announced that he had taken on a role in the film. Elisabeth Röhm signed her contract on June 17, 2014 . She took on the role of John Link's ex-wife Ursula in the film, but she was completely cut in the final version.
Filming
Filming began on June 5, 2014 in Albuquerque , New Mexico and ended after one month on July 3, 2014. Parts of the film were shot there in desert locations. Robert Gantz acted as cameraman .
Publication and distribution
On May 5, 2014 it was announced that Wild Bunch had taken over the worldwide distribution of the film. On December 9, 2014, Lionsgate acquired the US rights to the film.
The film premiered on May 21, 2016 at the Cannes Film Festival and was released in selected US cinemas on August 26, 2016. The film was released in Germany on October 28, 2016 as Blu-ray and DVD .
reception
The film won over 88 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and came second in the 18th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the category Best Action Movie 2016 .
Owen Gleiberman of Variety said the film look like a grindhouse movie of the 70s . Gleiberman describes the film as garbage , but it is gripping, which it owes to the accomplished actor Mel Gibson, who after the end of his great career in film shows that he has not lost his talent.
