After the success of their first single Boyz-n-the-Hood , music manager Jerry Heller sees potential in them, and he can persuade Eazy-E to work for NWA as a manager. The gang gets their recording equipment from the record label Priority Records , with which they produce their first album Straight Outta Compton . At this point only Eazy-E got a contract from the label, the others are still waiting for it.

After Straight Outta Compton was released and became a huge success, NWA embarked on a tour of the United States. On this tour, the group faces several protests. A riot escalated on a show when they rap the song Fuck tha Police despite the police's ban . Shortly thereafter, Ice Cube becomes suspicious of Heller's management and his relationship with Eazy-E. He confronts both of them and receives the answer that the contracts for the others would still be written. Before the crew goes home after the tour, Ice Cube meets Heller to sign his contract, which he ultimately doesn't do because Eazy-E gets more money than everyone else, even though everyone does the same job they do Makes group successful. Ice Cube also learns that he was the last to sign his contract. Disappointed, Ice Cube leaves the group and starts a solo career as a rapper.

His first album became more successful and sold more than Straight Outta Compton . The group, which now only consists of four members, gets jealous and brings out their new album 100 Miles and Runnin ' , on which they verbally attack Ice Cube for leaving the group. Angry about it, Ice Cube makes a disstrack against NWA and their manager Heller. During this time, Suge Knight joins Dr. Dres life trying to convince him to leave the group and start his own company with him. After realizing that Heller is taking advantage of him, Dre tries to talk to Eazy-E to work out the contract, but when no compromise can be found, Dr. Dre the group. Meanwhile, Eazy-E is beaten up by Suge Knight and his gang to force him to let Dre out of the contract. Despite the chaos, Dre enjoys his newfound freedom. He released his first album The Chronic and began producing songs by other rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur . When he realizes how violent Suge Knight is, he wonders if he really made the right decision.

After Ice Cube and Dr. Dre have left the crew, Eazy-E Heller becomes more and more suspicious. He also gets sick, which initially doesn't interest him. He meets Ice Cube at a club where they are reestablishing their friendship, and Cube tells him he would be ready to reshape NWA when Heller is gone. When Eazy-E returns home, he notices that Heller has embezzled the group's money and fires him. Immediately afterwards, he calls Dre, gives him this message and asks him if he would be ready to reform NWA. Dre agrees. While they are working on new material, Eazy-E collapses during an admission and is taken to the hospital where he is diagnosed with HIV . Before his death on March 26, 1995, each of the NWA members visited him again.

The film ends with a scene in which Dr. Dre Suge Knight says that he will get out of his label and start his own label Aftermath .
