Apple Music is a music streaming - service of Apple . It was presented on June 8, 2015 at WWDC 2015 in the Moscone Center in San Francisco and has been available in 100 countries since June 30, 2015, including Germany , Austria and Switzerland .

concept

For a monthly fee of 9.99 euros or 4.99 euros for students or 14.99 euros for a family subscription (up to 6 users), the service offers  access to the Apple Music catalog with around 60 million Titles (iTunes Music Store offering: approx. 60 million titles worldwide). Apple Music can be used on up to ten devices, but not at the same time. This is possible, among other things, on up to five computers. The service is divided into various functions. Artists should be able to publish music, upload photos and videos and spread news on the platform.

With the “For you” function, music is recommended to the user. The recommendations are based both on what kind of music he has bought in the iTunes Store as well as on which songs he played on Apple Music and which he marked with "I like" or "I don't like". Here music suggestions are generated automatically with an algorithm and playlists compiled by DJs are presented.

Recently published music is presented in the “Discover” function. This can be sorted by popularity, but also by genre. New albums, singles and music videos are presented. Recommendations include music based on geographic location as well as popular older music.

All you need for the radio function is an Apple ID, but no Apple Music subscription. Both the Beats 1 radio, which is heavily advertised by Apple, and radio stations that play a selected music genre can be used. Without a paid membership, however, it is only possible to a limited extent to skip tracks. Beats 1 radio station is hosted around the clock by Zane Lowe in Los Angeles (former BBC Radio 1 presenter ), Ebro Darden in New York City (hip-hop DJ) and Julie Adenuga from London . Local radio stations can also be played.

The stored music can be viewed in the "media library" section. Here the music can be sorted according to album, artist, song, playlist, genre, composer and compilation. A filter can also be activated for the music stored for offline use.

Playlists can also be created. These can be provided with both a picture and a description. Playlists from other users can also be added.

Since iOS 11, every Apple Music user can create a profile. Playlists and current listening behavior can be published here. Users can also find other users and follow them. You can connect your profile to Facebook for this.

Membership includes the iTunes Match feature. Music that isn't available on Apple Music but is in the user's iTunes library is automatically uploaded to iCloud so that these songs are also available on all synced devices. Up to 100,000 songs can currently be uploaded.

Original content for Germany

On June 17th, 2020, the first episode of “HYPED Radio” was released on Apple Music. It is the first on demand radio show from Germany. The show focuses on new German rap releases and is based on the playlist of the same name “HYPED”. HYPED Radio is moderated by Aria Nejati, a German hip-hop tastemaker. A new episode appears every Wednesday.

“New Music Daily Deutschland Radio” followed on July 10, 2020, the German version of the international Beats 1 radio show “New Music Daily Radio”. The show presents the most important new releases of the week from Germany and around the world and is based on the playlist of the same name “New Music Daily”. The show is moderated by Aisha, a German singer-songwriter and radio host, and appears weekly on Friday.

Availability

The service has been available for iOS , watchOS , macOS , tvOS and Windows since June 30, 2015 , and an Android version followed in autumn 2015. Apple started - although the structure and resources were in place since 2003 - only 12 years later with the Music streaming, as company founder Steve Jobs had a negative attitude towards music streaming. He argued at the 2003 Apple Special Event that, unlike a movie, you hear a song your entire life, not just a few times. So it is pointless to take out a subscription that only allows one access right but prohibits personal use (burning CDs, using them in home movies, etc.).

In contrast to other streaming services, Apple Music could not initially be accessed with a web browser, which requires the use of a client for Windows and OS X iTunes . The transmitted music is protected with FairPlay copy protection and cannot be used by other programs after the stream. A streaming quality of 256 kbit / s in AAC format is used. (Equivalent to MP3 with 320 kbit / s).

At the Worldwide Developers Conference 2018, Apple introduced with MusicKit a JavaScript - Framework ago, with the via the browser can be accessed tracks and albums.

Controversy

Even before the service was released, competition authorities in the US states of New York and Connecticut checked whether Apple had put pressure on the labels to stop free offers from competitors such as Spotify.

On June 21, 2015, the artist Taylor Swift published an open letter to Apple criticizing the lack of compensation for the artists during the three-month trial period, which is free for users. She argued, “We're not asking you to have free iPhones either . So don't ask if we can provide you with our music without compensation. "(" We don't ask you for free iPhones. Please don't ask us (recording artists) to provide you with our music for no compensation. ") A day later, Eddy Cue , Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, called on Twitter to announce a change in Apple's business practices. Artists are now being paid for the streams during the free trial period. ("Apple Music will pay artist for streaming, even during customer's free trial period".) Then Taylor Swift decided to release her new album in 1989 on Apple Music. Swift also noted that all artists are now being paid and that she does not have an exclusive agreement with Apple. Which, in their view, is the reason: “… why it feels good to offer an album via a streaming service for the first time.” (“After the events of this week, I've decided to put 1989 on Apple Music… And happily so ”,“ the first time it's felt right in my gut to stream my album ”).
