BBC Radio 1 is a radio program from the BBC that is aimed primarily at a young audience aged 15 to 29. It specializes in new, current and trend-setting music. The station's DJs have largely a free hand in designing their programs. As in all BBC programs, advertising is not broadcast.

history

The station's program started on September 30, 1967 at 7:00 am with the song "Flowers in the rain" from " The Move ". The first moderator was Tony Blackburn . According to John Peel , who was also one of the first DJs and worked there until his death in 2004, the establishment of Radio 1 was a reaction by the BBC and the British government to the wave of protests over the closure of the pirate stations , which began in 1967 the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act were banned (see e.g. Radio Caroline ). Until then, the BBC had viewed pop music as "beneath its dignity". According to Radiorewind.co.uk, the development of the station can be roughly divided into two phases:

From 1967 to 1993 the "happy sound": Radio 1 spread a good mood with cheerful moderators and played the latest hits. A trademark of the station were u. a. the “Roadshows”, during which a BBC OB van drove through Great Britain in the summer, reporting from a different location or broadcasting concerts.

In 1993 the program was radically reformed. Radio 1 should be closer to the pulse of the 1990s, discover new trends and make unknown bands known. Old-school rock'n'roll, until then a trademark of the station, was largely a thing of the past. The best proof: The band Status Quo , which gave a concert for the station's 25th birthday in 1992, was no longer allowed to play.

Many presenters migrated - along with the music they were playing - to BBC Radio 2 , which appeals to an older audience. Some presenters like John Peel, who was the longest-serving Radio 1 DJ (37 years since it started broadcasting) stayed and continued to shape the face of the station.

today

The station is facing competition from the various commercial local radio stations (such as Heart FM in London or Key 103 in Manchester ), from numerous pirate stations, particularly in London, but also from “ Virgin Radio ” on medium wave. However, Radio 1 tries to draw attention to itself through its web offering, which is unique in Central Europe. Because all programs broadcast on Radio 1 can be heard seven days after being broadcast in the so-called BBC iPlayer. Moderators such as John Peel and Annie Nightingale achieved world fame. In 2003 the readers of Spex magazine voted Radio One the best radio station of the year.

reception

For decades, Radio 1 broadcast only on medium wave and partly (in a frequency split with BBC Radio 2) on VHF . Radio 1 could therefore also be heard in parts of Western Europe at night. At the end of the 1980s, the first single VHF frequency for Radio 1 was added in London. After all, the frequency network was so extensive that Radio 1 could be received nationwide between 97.6 and 99.8 MHz on VHF. Therefore, the program identified itself in its jingles for a while as Radio 1 FM or 97-99 FM, Radio 1 , in order to draw attention to the reception via VHF. In the summer of 1994, medium wave transmission was discontinued and the frequencies previously used were handed over to private providers.

In addition, the program from BBC Radio 1 can also be received via DAB (channel 12B).

Via ASTRA 19.2 ° East analogue, the program could be received in stereo for years. Today it is located at ASTRA position 28.2 ° East and can be received digitally throughout Germany and large parts of Europe without any problems. From 2013, however, the BBC radio programs will move to the Astra 2f satellite, making reception in Germany much more difficult.

Radio 1's program can - like almost all BBC radio programs - be used as a live stream over the Internet. Most programs are also kept available for a week after they have been broadcast in reduced sound quality.

In 2002 the BBC put the digital ( DAB , DVB-T , Internet Stream and ASTRA digital) additional program BBC Radio 1Xtra into operation with black music , hip-hop and drum and bass .
