tvOS is a proprietary operating system for Apple TV devices. The first version appeared on May 30, 2007 as the operating system of the first Apple TV under the original name Apple TV software and was based on Mac OS X Tiger up to version 3 . With Version 4 was on iOS changed as a base, which in turn from the iPhone OS and iPad OS emerged, and in turn also on Mac OS X is based. In 2015 the operating system was renamed “tvOS” with version 9. Common to all of these operating systems, the Darwin core, a BSD - Unix with its own kernel .

history

1st generation: versions 1.0 to 3.0.2

The first version of the Apple TV software was based on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.7, 2006), the user interface was initially a special version of Front Row . In February 2008, version 2.0 (also known as Apple TV “Take 2”) was developed as an independent user interface. This is most noticeable in the main menu: the colorfully animated menu from Front Row has been replaced in version 2.x by an almost purely black and white, angular main menu.

The range of functions has been constantly expanded compared to Front Row, the German-language changelog gives an overview. Special functional enhancements are access to Flickr , YouTube , MobileMe , iTunes Store (for movies in HD quality) and its streaming function for AirPlay-enabled speakers (back then this technology was still called AirTunes). With version 2.4 the possibility to play the background music specified there for slide shows created in iPhoto has been removed. Instead, you can only specify a song or a playlist on the Apple TV that will be used in all slide shows.

On October 29, 2009, Apple released version 3.0 of the software. The most noticeable improvement is the changed layout of the main menu, which allows direct access to the latest media. There was also support for iTunes LP, iTunes Extras, iTunes Genius Mixes, Internet radio stations listed in iTunes and two new search options for events or faces for media stored in iPhoto or Aperture.

2nd and 3rd generation: versions 4.0 to 6.2.1

Version 4.0 of the Apple TV software was released in September 2010 with the second generation of Apple TV. Visually, it is similar to version 3, but technically it is no longer based on the Mac OS X operating system, but on iOS in order to be able to use the Apple A4 processor ( ARM architecture) of the new Apple TV. The first generation Apple TV with Intel processor ( IA-32 architecture) is therefore no longer supported from this version.

For the appearance of the third generation of Apple TV, the user interface was redesigned again with version 5.0; the start page with colored icons became more iOS-like. The operating concept has been further simplified, so only a single computer can be connected to the Apple TV. On the other hand, it is possible to stream from multiple iOS devices.

From software version 5.2, the Apple TV can also output audio to AirPlay speakers. In addition, the pairing of the Apple Wireless Keyboard via Bluetooth is now supported.

Version 6.0 of the Apple TV software brought among other things the conference room display, automatic software updates, podcasts, iTunes radio (US only) and iMovie theater.

3rd generation: Version 7.0 to 7.4

Version 7.0 was released in September 2014, from which the second generation of the Apple TV is no longer supported. The most noticeable innovation is the revised design of the user interface, with which Apple is also transferring the move away from skeuomorphic elements to a "flatter" software design that began in iOS 7 to the Apple TV. Support for iCloud family sharing and peer-to-peer AirPlay has also been added, the latter requiring a third-generation Rev A Apple TV . New services such as Apple Music have so far not been published for the Apple TV software, but only for the successor tvOS.

On May 13, 2019, the 3rd generation received another update after a long time. In addition to some bug fixes in the area of Bluetooth and WiFi, the version also got access to a fundamentally revised TV app, which Apple also made available for tvOS 12.3 at the same time.

In the course of the introduction of iOS 13 on September 24, 2019 and other software updates from Apple, the Apple TV software 7.4 was also released. According to Apple, the 7.4 update mainly contains bug fixes, although the Apple TV app has also been revised and prepared for the launch of Apple's new Apple TV + streaming service . The logo of the Apple TV app has also changed slightly and now corresponds to the graphic representation known from iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 Catalina.

4th generation and newer: tvOS

At the same time as the fourth generation of Apple TV, a new operating system called tvOS was introduced in September 2015, which does not run on older generations of Apple TV. In addition to a completely redesigned user interface, it offers an app store and Siri voice control , both new features for Apple TV. According to Craig Federighi , tvOS is 95% iOS based , with adjustments for use on the TV screen. The version number is identical to that of iOS. As a result, version 8 was skipped and the first version under the name tvOS has version number 9.0.

With version 11, tvOS supports the new Apple TV 4K and supports playback in UHD , optionally with HDR . Purchased old HD films are automatically made available free of charge as 4K with or without HDR depending on availability. TvOS 11 also runs on the 4th generation Apple TV, but without UHD and without HDR.

The new tvOS 12 was presented in June 2018, the innovation is above all the future support of Dolby Atmos , which will only appear in Q4 2018.

In June 2019 tvOS 13 was shown at WWDC 2019. In addition to a completely redesigned home screen, the new version offers multi-user support. In addition, Apple Arcade comes on AppleTV.
