MobileMe was a paid online service from Apple that kept data in sync on mobile and stationary devices. These could be emails , appointments, addresses or photos. Supported devices include the iPhone , iPod touch , iPad and computers with macOS , Windows or a recent browser. MobileMe was discontinued on July 1, 2012 and replaced by iCloud .

history

MobileMe was announced on June 9, 2008 at the WWDC 2008 conference as a successor to .Mac . The new name is associated with a change in the focus on immediate synchronization of data on various mobile and stationary devices using push technology and access to your own data, regardless of your location.

Due to the heavy load, Apple was only able to provide the push service for mobile devices after the offer began. As compensation, Apple extended the term of the contract for existing customers free of charge by 30 days and later by a further 60 days. Apple also reported that approximately 1% of MobileMe users were unable to use the built-in email service for at least a week.

On June 6, 2011, Apple announced at WWDC that the iCloud MobileMe service, which has been offered since October 12, 2011 , will completely replace MobileMe from July 1, 2012.

Differences between .Mac and MobileMe

MobileMe replaced the .Mac service on July 10, 2008 . The conversion for the users happened automatically.

While .Mac was mainly geared towards desktop and notebook use, MobileMe was supposed to provide Internet services for Mac OS as well as iPhone and Windows users, keep most of the services known from .Mac and add additional services (e.g. push Services ). Some functions were no longer available or were at least no longer integrated in the way they were with .Mac:

  • The iCards (greeting cards) were no longer used.
  • Internet access to synchronized Safari bookmarks was no longer available.
  • It was no longer possible to create new e-mail-only accounts, but existing ones could be extended.
  • The group function no longer existed ("In MobileMe, groups are no longer an integral part of the application, but you can still use previously created .Mac groups." ( Apple Support : MobileMe: Information on .Mac groups ))
  • The synchronization with Macs under macOS 10.3 "Panther" was no longer possible.
  • The .Mac homepage web application no longer existed, but it continued to exist through a link in the iDisk web application.
  • The .Mac slides ( English ".Mac Slides" ) were no longer supported. You can still access slides that have already been published, but you can only publish them with old versions of iPhoto and Aperture that still support this function. A stand-alone program ".Mac Slides Publisher" is no longer available.

Functions

Push services

MobileMe includes so-called push services for e-mail, calendar and addresses. At the start of MobileMe, however, the push services are only available for the iPod touch and iPhone as well as the browser-based web applications. On computers, synchronization takes place at an interval of at least 60 seconds.

synchronization

MobileMe should data (e-mail accounts (including all rules and signatures), addresses, calendars, bookmarks, dashboard widgets, dock objects, key rings, notes, settings) between multiple devices ( Mac , iPhone , iPad , iPod touch and Windows - PC ) keep synchronized. This is done via a connection to the Internet. The programs Mail , Apple Safari , Address Book and iCal integrated in macOS are supported , but also Microsoft Outlook , Internet Explorer and Safari under Windows.

Web applications

In addition, the MobileMe web apps on the service's website give customers the option of accessing their own data via a web browser from any computer and also editing some of them. The user has access to the following web applications:

  • Mail (access to e-mails from your own MobileMe user account)
  • Address book (access to contact information synchronized via MobileMe)
  • Calendar (access to calendar data synchronized via MobileMe)
  • Gallery (Publishing pictures and videos in the MobileMe gallery with uploading and downloading, album organization, various setting options and access to photo albums synchronized with iPhoto or Aperture .)
  • iDisk (read and write access to the iDisk as well as deleting files and (de-) compressing zip files)
  • Find my iPhone (remote wipe access)
  • User account (changing personal data such as address or billing address, extending membership, buying additional options such as more storage space and viewing the current availability of the individual MobileMe services)

E-mail service

The service includes an e-mail account and an e-mail address (e.g. first name.surname @ me.com ) which can be queried via IMAP or POP3 .

gallery

The gallery function can be used to post pictures on the Internet and selectively make them available to other users. It is also possible for other users to add further images to a gallery. This can be done via browser or email. The added pictures are automatically synced with the local iPhoto.

iDisk

iDisk provides 20 or more gigabytes of storage space on servers , which can be accessed via the WebDAV protocol or a browser.

Access to my Mac

Access to my Mac is provided for macOS . This is a service that allows data access to the Mac at home from any Internet access point.

Find my iPhone / iPad

As of June 17, 2009, Apple will be adding a new function that can be used to find a misplaced iPhone or iPad . With a click of the mouse, the device can be located, its position displayed on a map and a ringtone triggered with a message, even if it is muted. Since November 2010, with the introduction of iOS 4.2.1, this service has been free at least for owners of an iPhone 4, iPod touch (4G) or iPad.

Delete data from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad

If your own iPhone, iPod touch or iPad has been stolen, you can have the entire data deleted. This makes the device unusable and personal data cannot fall into the wrong hands. Since November 2010, with the introduction of iOS 4.2.1, this service has been free at least for owners of an iPhone 4, iPod touch (4G) or iPad.

Lock your iPhone or iPad

With the introduction of OS 3.1 for the iPhone, there is a new function with which the iPhone or iPad can be locked remotely with a four-digit access code. This option is useful if you don't want to carry out a complete deletion straight away and still want to lock out the finder or thief of the iPhone. Since the introduction of iOS 4.2.1 in November 2010, this service has been available free of charge to owners of an iPhone 4 or iPad.

Transition to iCloud

iCloud was presented on June 6, 2011 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and officially launched on October 12, 2011. As of July 1, 2012, the new service has completely replaced MobileMe's offer. Up to this date, Apple has repeatedly asked users to move their data to iCloud, as all functions of the old offer are available except for iWebPublishing, Gallery and iDisk. Due to the ongoing criticism of iCloud and the fact that not all users have changed their accounts, Apple extended the deadline for moving the data by twelve months to September 2013 in October 2012. In addition, former MobileMe customers get additional storage space free of charge.

criticism

With versions 7.7 to 8.2 of the iTunes software for Windows, the MobileMe service was installed as a system service without being asked. There was no option to deselect during installation.

The introduction of MobileMe was fraught with problems. The service was partially unavailable or only available to a limited extent and, especially as a web application, had unusually long response times.

Apple founder Steve Jobs said in 2011 on the occasion of the introduction of iCloud that MobileMe was not Apple's "great moment".
