Siri is a software from Apple that is used to recognize and process naturally spoken language and thus to fulfill the functions of what is known as an intelligent personal assistant . Siri runs on Apple's iOS , macOS , watchOS , tvOS and iPadOS operating systems . At the end of 2016, Apple's servers were processing around 2 billion Siri requests per week.

Siri was initially only available for the iPhone 4s on iOS 5 . With iOS 6, the assistant can also be used on 3rd generation iPads and newer, the iPhone 5 and finally the iPad mini and the 5th generation iPod touch . On September 9, 2014, the first Apple Watch with Siri support was announced. Exactly a year later, the 4th generation Apple TV was released, which also supports Siri. With the release of macOS Sierra , the voice assistant found its way into the personal computer product lines.

In the past, updates to the operating system have often expanded the range of functions, with critics saying that this software is subject to competition.

history

Siri Inc. was founded in 2007 by Dag Kittlaus ( CEO ), Adam Cheyer (VP Engineering) and Tom Gruber ( CTO / VP Design ) together with Norman Winarsky ( SRI International ). October 13, 2008 Siri was a funding of 8.5 million US dollars known. Menlo Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures contributed the capital. In November 2009, Siri announced an additional $ 15.5 million funding; Hong Kong- based billionaire Li Ka-shing joined the previous investors . In April 2010, Apple bought the company with all rights to the products. Dag Kittlaus led the project until the iPhone 4s was released and then left Apple.

Siri was introduced by Apple on October 4, 2011 in a product presentation of the iPhone 4s . At the market launch on October 14, 2011, Siri understood the languages English , German and French ; Likewise, the iPhone speaks receipts and other issues for the user in these languages. Apple initially marked this version of Siri as a beta version , an unusual measure for Apple's release policy.

The Siri protocol was cracked in November 2011, so that Siri could theoretically also be used on any other device. Several developers have successfully ported Siri to the iPhone 4 . Apple did not comment on this. However, observers suspect that hardware specially adapted for Siri is used in the iPhone 4s or that Apple wanted to gradually scale the number of accesses to the server infrastructure during the beta phase. In the early stages there were a few issues with this that Apple didn't comment on either.

The 4th generation Apple TV was released on September 9, 2015. With this it was from now on also possible to use Siri on the TV. The voice control is started via the Siri Remote by holding down the voice button. With Siri, many of the familiar functions can be used on the Apple TV, but some functions are limited or not available. It is also possible to view films or TV programs by naming the search criteria, e.g. B. "Show me new comedies by Matthias Schweighöfer".

With the release of macOS High Sierra on September 25, 2017, some features that Siri had previously in iOS 11 were brought to the Mac. Among other things, Siri got a new icon , a more natural voice and some other functions, such as: B. the acceptance of text as input.

Functions

The program can act as a personal assistant by providing appropriate answers to questions from the user or executing commands that otherwise require manual input. The device with the Siri software should therefore be able to be operated without eye contact for more complex tasks. To activate Siri, the Home button is pressed and briefly held at the beginning . Starting with the iPhone 6s and the iPad Pro 9.7 ″, Siri can also be activated without contact using the activation word “Hey, Siri”. On older devices this only works if the device is connected to a power source.

Siri then reacts to calls, which can then, for example, set up calls to people in the phone book, make calendar entries, record reminders about events or reminders. Even more extensive inquiries that require the availability of web services are implemented, including calculating distances between locations, calling up weather forecasts or researching lexicons such as Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha . Not all functions are available in all language versions. For example, traffic information and inquiries to Wolfram Alpha are only available in English and in the United States.

In addition, the software can be used by blind or visually impaired people. In combination with the accessibility setting VoiceOver, you can use Siri to read and write tweets and to select video clips on YouTube . With a single touch of a button on the smartphone display, the user hears the name of the symbol acoustically and can open the application with a double tap.

Basically, iOS users have the option of locking their data against unauthorized access using a code . In the standard setting, Siri also works when the screen is locked and allows third parties to query messages, contacts and calendar entries without unlocking, which is a security risk, especially for companies. This can be remedied by changing the lock screen settings . Since iOS 7.1.2, contacts can no longer be queried in this way without a code.

In 2017, Apple announced that it would use Google again instead of Microsoft's Bing for the Siri search function for web queries via iOS and in the Spotlight function on the Mac. According to an analyst estimate, Apple will receive around three billion dollars from Google in 2017 for this preset of Google as a search engine, which means that Google generates around five percent of Apple's operating profit.

With the 2019 update, the Siri voice was generated purely technically from now on.

Siri will also support third-party music apps from fall 2020.

The voice data compressed with Speex is transmitted to an Apple server via an encrypted HTTPS connection according to the client-server principle when there is an existing internet connection , processed there and the result is reported back to the iOS device. Each request is signed with a unique identifier that Apple uses to ensure that there are no unauthorized requests. The previous concept originally came from Siri Inc. of the same name , which Apple took over in 2010. This emerged from the “CALO” project of the American military, which was put out to tender in 2003 by DARPA .

In a survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal and ABC News in May 2012, 55 percent said they were satisfied with the service, 36 percent did not commit, and 9 percent were somewhat dissatisfied.
