The iPad 3rd generation , with the launch in March 2012 as the new iPad called, is the third model of the iPad - Tablet computer series of the US company Apple . It was introduced to the public by Tim Cook on March 7, 2012 , and was available for purchase from March 16, 2012. From October 26, 2012, it was replaced by its successor, the 4th generation iPad .

description

The 3rd generation iPad has an aluminum back and optionally a white or black edge of the front glass pane around the central screen. A home button is attached to the lower center edge, and an orientation lock switch is located on the right side of the case next to the volume rocker. The 3rd generation iPad has a camera below the on / off switch on the top of the housing, and another camera is installed on the front in the middle of the upper edge of the screen. The resolution of the cameras is 5.0 and 0.3 megapixels. There is also a mono microphone and a 3.5 mm jack connection on the top. A mono speaker is installed on the underside next to the classic 30-pin dock connector. The 3rd generation iPad is operated primarily by touching the touch screen.

Apple offered the 3rd generation iPad as a 16, 32 or 64 GB version without a modem. Additionally, there is for the North American market an iPad with CDMA - Modem and 0.7 GHz LTE ( Verizon model) and for the American and European market with a 2.1- and 0.7-GHz LTE and UMTS -Modem ( AT&T model). The AT&T devices use micro SIM cards with the form factor 3FF (12 mm × 15 mm) and cannot use LTE in Europe because the LTE frequency bands common in Europe are not supported by the 3rd generation iPad. Apple states up to 10 hours of battery life when surfing the Internet via WLAN and up to 9 hours when using a 3G data network. The battery of the 3rd generation iPad is a 42.5 Wh lithium polymer battery that takes around six hours to charge. In addition to the cellular modem, Apple installed an A-GPS module. Devices without a modem also have the digital compass.

The 3rd generation Apple A5X , which uses an ARM Cortex A9 dual-core processor with a clock frequency of 1 GHz, serves as a system-on-a-chip . The 3rd generation iPad has an SGX-543 graphics processor with four cores in every version .

criticism

The 3rd generation iPad received positive criticism, especially for its high-resolution screen, which, according to Vivek Gowri and Anand Lal Shimpi, "emphasizes not only the high resolution, but also the quality."

The higher weight compared to the predecessor and the higher thermal load on the lower left side of the case were criticized negatively, which, according to Apple, is within limits.

Golem titled the mobile radio properties of the 3rd generation iPad as "sham LTE", "Apple suggests on the German description page that 4G is also great for German users and presents the unavailability of LTE as an exception."
