Apple Watch is a smartwatch that has been available from the US company Apple since April 24, 2015.

The second generation, consisting of Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch Series 2 , was introduced on September 7, 2016.

On September 12, 2017, the third generation was introduced with the Apple Watch Series 3 . The Apple Watch Series 4 was shown on September 12, 2018.

The Apple Watch Series 5 was presented by Apple on September 10, 2019.

Functions and technology

The Apple Watch has sensors for measuring the heart rate as well as a position and acceleration sensor that detects movements and can therefore be used for fitness apps, among other things. Heart rate signals are also determined. Among other things, it can display upcoming appointments or incoming messages. Since March 2015, apps for the iPhone from third-party providers in the App Store have also supported the Apple Watch. With an NFC chip is Apple Pay supports. Since the presentation of version 2.0 at WWDC 2015 on June 8, 2015 , Apple has referred to the operating system as watchOS , instead of the previous watch OS .

As of watchOS 2.0, third-party apps that work without a connection to the iPhone are also possible.

Operation is via voice control ( Siri ), via a capacitive touchscreen , which also detects the pressure, and via a digital crown for scrolling and zooming . The crown can be pressed to return to the home screen like the home button in the iPhone .

The device also contains a linear actuator for haptic feedback . This means that the Apple Watch can use the Maps service, for example, to show directions in the form of different types of vibration.

Apple S1 was initially used as the SiP . The Apple Watch has a WLAN b / g / n module (2.4 GHz) that transmits a maximum of 150  Mbit / s, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 .

In the first generation, the GPS receiver of the paired iPhone was used. This caused displeasure, especially among athletes who want to use the watch as a fitness tracker. After the Apple Watch has been calibrated , distances covered can also be displayed without a connection to the iPhone. From the Series 2, the Apple Watch includes a GPS receiver, so the exact running route can also be recorded without an iPhone.

LTE and UMTS are optionally supported on the Apple Watch Series 3 .

Hardware compatibility

The 1st generation Apple Watch is compatible with the iPhone 5 and subsequent iPhones (from iOS 8.2). It uses the energy-saving Bluetooth LE standard.

For watchOS 4 and the Apple Watch models shipped with it (Series 1 and 3), an iPhone with iOS 11 or higher is required. This means that there is no compatibility with iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c .

The cellular-compatible version of the Apple Watch Series 3 requires an iPhone 6 or later.

Programming of apps

Apple provides developers an SDK called "WatchKit" for the development environment Xcode under OS X .

Battery life

The 38 mm version of the lithium-polymer battery in the Apple Watch (1st generation) stores 205 mAh at a voltage of 3.8 volts. That corresponds to the energy of 0.78  watt hours .

It can be used for around 18 hours. This was checked with 90 display activations by raising the arm, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app usage and 30 minutes of training with music via a Bluetooth headset . The battery life for phone calls should be up to 3 hours, for audio playback up to 6.5 hours. If you use the device as a wristwatch without starting apps, the running time can be 2 days (48 hours). Fully charging an empty Apple Watch (to 100 percent) takes 2.5 hours, 80 percent only 1.5 hours. After the battery level falls below a certain level, the time can be queried four times per hour.

restrictions

Tattoos can make heart rate readings difficult because the ink, pattern, and density of the tattoo block the light from the sensor.

The LTE versions do not yet support roaming, so there is no connection to the cellular network outside the network of your own network operator.

Models

The 1st generation Apple Watch was available in three models: a regular (“Apple Watch”) made of stainless steel and sapphire glass, a lighter and more stable one for sports and fitness (“Apple Watch Sport”) made of aluminum and tempered glass, and a model made of ceramic (the Series 1 Edition was available in 18- carat gold) and sapphire crystal (“Apple Watch Edition”). In cooperation with the sporting goods manufacturer Nike and the luxury fashion manufacturer Hermès , further offshoots of the Apple Watch were released, each of which differs from the other models with its exclusive dials and bracelets. Each model is available in two different sizes (38 and 42 mm, measured by height). There are also six different bracelets made of leather, plastic and metal. The 38-millimeter display has a resolution of 272 × 340 pixels and the 42-millimeter model has 312 × 390 pixels. The aspect ratios of the displays are therefore 4: 5. The Ion-X display of the Apple Watch Sport can be damaged with a very sharp and hard material, whereas the Apple Watch with sapphire crystal can withstand the strongest impacts.

The devices are delivered with bracelet sizes (S / M and M / L) in the same color (only the perforated bracelet part is available twice). The other versions come with a bracelet.

With Apple Watch Series 4 , the display size was changed. There is a 40 millimeter display with 324 x 394 pixels and a 44 millimeter display with 368 x 448 pixels. Since then, the Apple Watch has also been recording electrocardiograms and recording heart problems such as atrial fibrillation. At the set age of 60 and over, she recognizes falls and calls emergency services.

A compass is included from Apple Watch Series 5 . In addition, the display is permanently active. Previous models only activated the display when the watch was moved or tapped.

Medical application

Since the Apple Watch Series 4, it is possible - depending on country-specific regulations - to make 1-channel ECG recordings of lead type 1 (left or right arm) lasting 30 seconds and to export the measurement result as a PDF file on an iPhone.

The University Hospital Mainz explained in a specialist article in the European Heart Journal in 2020 that the ECG APP on the Apple Watch is not only suitable for diagnosing cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. An 80-year-old Apple Watch wearer was admitted to the Chest Pain Unit because of chest pain, irregular pulse and clouding of consciousness. These are symptoms of coronary heart disease (CHD) and thus harbingers of a heart attack. However, an EKG and blood test were normal. The app's EKG recordings showed pronounced reductions in the ST segment - clear indications of a severe and acute cardiovascular disorder. When the woman was immediately examined with a cardiac catheter, a severe CHD was found that could have led to a heart attack. The almost closed coronary arteries were stretched with a balloon and provided with stents. Two days later the patient was discharged symptom-free.

Reactions

Initial reactions to the Apple Watch were very different. Walter Mossberg praised the user interface as "simple and smart".

The Apple Watch was awarded the iF Design Award 2015 in gold on February 27, 2015 in Munich .

The magazine “test” of the Stiftung Warentest (issue 12/2019) came to the result that only two of the tested smartwatches (Apple Watch Series 5 and Garmin Forerunner 245 Music) deserved the rating “good” (“Apple and Garmin hang out with the competition with a big lead ”). The Apple Watch provides the most accurate fitness data.

Naming

Apple had worked in the past to protect the iWatch brand for its smartwatch . There were problems with the protected iSwatch brand of the Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch . So Apple decided on the name "Apple Watch".

Sales

According to the market research company Canalys Apple, Apple may have sold around 18 million Apple Watches in 2017. According to IDC, Apple is said to have sold more watches in the final quarter of 2017 than the Swiss watch industry combined. This makes Apple the world's largest watch manufacturer. In 2019, Apple is the clear market leader in smartwatches.
