The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are smartphones from the US company Apple , which were launched at the same time as the eighth model in the iPhone product range . They were presented on September 9, 2014 as part of a public keynote speech by Phil Schiller as the successor to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c and have been available since September 19, 2014. On September 25, 2015, the devices were replaced by their successors iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus . After the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus , Apple removed the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from sales after two years.

As with every smartphone in the iPhone product range, Apple's in-house iOS operating system is also used on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ; When the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus came onto the market, iOS 8.0 was included, the highest iOS version officially offered by Apple that was published for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is 12.4.8.

Characteristics

The devices are significantly larger than their predecessors and have a screen size of 4.7 (iPhone 6) or 5.5  inches (iPhone 6 Plus), the first with 1334 × 750 pixels, the second with 1080p resolution. The mobile phones were delivered with the iOS 8 operating system . Both models have been developed with the Apple A8 chip with 64-bit - ARMv8 architecture, iSight and - FaceTime -inch HD cameras and Apple Pay ( mobile payment function delivered) in versions with 16, 64 or 128 GB storage capacity. The nano-SIM cards introduced with the iPhone 5 are used in the iPhone 6 .

After the MEMS - accelerometer BMA280 the German company Bosch Sensortec was first used in the fifth-generation iPhone, will be supplemented this with the iPhone 6 also by a pressure gauge BMP280. The NFC payment chip is manufactured by the Austrian company ams AG . The largest number of microchips in the iPhone 6 comes from the US semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm , which supplies a total of five chips. The battery of the iPhone 6 has a capacity of 1810  mAh at 3.82  volts .

On September 15, 2014, Apple announced that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus had been pre-ordered four million times within 24 hours, making it the largest pre-order in iPhone history. In total, more than ten million devices were sold worldwide during the first sales weekend.

iPhone 6 Plus

The technical specifications of the iPhone 6 Plus are largely the same as those of the iPhone 6. The differences are:

  • It has a larger screen diagonal of 5.5 inches with a Full HD resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (corresponds to a pixel density of 401  ppi ).
  • The housing dimensions are 158.1 mm × 77.8 mm × 7.1 mm (H × W × D).
  • According to the manufacturer, the battery life is longer. According to Apple, it is up to 384 hours in standby mode , up to 24 hours of talk time (in the 3G network), and up to twelve hours of Internet use (3G, LTE or WLAN). The battery has a capacity of 2915 mAh at 3.82 V.
  • The rear camera of the iPhone 6 Plus has optical image stabilization . However, this is only used for photos and is deactivated during video recording.

reception

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus received mostly positive feedback from various specialist magazines . The camera, the display , the performance and the battery life in everyday use were praised in both models . However, the conspicuous antenna lines on the back and the protruding camera lens were perceived by many as unaesthetic. Chip Online complained about the battery life in the practical test and the large dimensions of the iPhone 6 Plus. The results are inconsistent, however, as the battery life was significantly better in AnandTech's tests. The test at Stiftung Warentest was similar : They rated the battery performance of the iPhone 6 Plus as good, that of the iPhone 6 only as satisfactory, as it discharges significantly faster than the iPhone 6 Plus in standby and telephone mode.

In individual cases on social networks and media, the case of the iPhone 6 Plus was reported to be bent. Based on the so-called “ Watergate Affair ”, the term “bendgate” was coined in this regard. Apple announced that bending is extremely rare in everyday use; Affected users could have an on-site Apple Store checked to see whether their device could be exchanged free of charge. In tests by an insurance company, the two new iPhones turned out to be more robust than the previous iPhone 5s and most other smartphones with large screens. Stiftung Warentest also showed through practical tests and bending tests that the iPhone models can withstand everyday use and are not significantly more sensitive than other smartphones.

However, these evaluations contradict the reports of many users and repair service providers, according to which the soldering points of the "Touch IC" chip of the iPhone 6 Plus responsible for the touch control would break due to minimal bends caused by everyday stress and the touch control could be permanently damaged.

Sales figures

Apple announced that the iPhone 6 had sold over 4 million times worldwide in the first 24 hours of availability. In the first three days of availability, it was sold 13 million times worldwide. With a total of around 220 million copies sold worldwide, the iPhone 6 is the third best-selling mobile phone and the best-selling smartphone.
