Chip ( own spelling : CHIP, formerly CHIP Online ) is the editorial technology and consumer portal with the widest reach on the German-speaking Internet . The site went online on February 15, 1996 as the online version of the oldest German PC magazine, Chip . According to IVW , chip.de achieved 75 million visits and 137 million page views in December 2019, and with over 20 million unique visitors , it is ranked 8th among the German websites listed by AGOF .

Chip Online has been operated with independent editorial staff since 2002 by Chip Digital GmbH , which has been a majority shareholding of Hubert Burda Media since October 2007 . The company, based in Munich, has around 200 permanent employees. The chip Digital GmbH is part of the Burda subsidiary Burda Forward , which includes among other things, Focus Online belongs.

Content

On the chip you can find free test reports on IT , telecommunications and consumer technology products, as well as consumer advice and videos about these products. Another focus is the download area with a large number of editorially checked free and shareware downloads. Chip also offers an independent price comparison service under the brand name Bestcheck . It also operates one of the largest German IT forums .

Since 2018 Chip.de has been transforming itself into a consumer portal and, in addition to the classic core technology topics, also deals with topics that are intended to appeal to consumers in Germany. These include news and articles about innovations at Aldi, Lidl and other retail chains. Since September 2019, consumer content has been bundled under the brand "CHIP 365 - The consumer portal for every day".

criticism

The chip installer, which is offered as standard for software downloads on chip.de, is viewed critically. Only when the user runs this program with administrator rights will the actual program files be downloaded and installed using this download program. This procedure is not only more cumbersome for the user, it is also offered to potentially unwanted programs (PUP). In the past, these were partially installed automatically. In the meantime, the user must explicitly activate the installation of the PUP. In addition, running the chip installer with administrator rights harbors security risks, but there are no advantages for the user. The chip installer is also recognized as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) by various antivirus programs . Chip also offers a direct download link for manual installation without a chip installer for each software.

Editorial offices

At the head of the editorial team are Niels Held and Josef Reitberger, the latter being responsible for the print magazine Chip . The deputy editor-in-chief at the magazine is Andreas Hentschel. The chip test chief is Wolfgang Pauler.

Change of name

In October 2013, the name was changed from Chip Xonio Online GmbH to Chip Digital GmbH . The previous company name still contained a reference to the mobile phone portal Xonio, which was integrated into the chip.de offer in 2009.
