Touch ID (fingerprint sensor), NFC ( Apple Pay )

The first iPhone SE ( original spelling with small caps ; retrospectively also iPhone SE 2016 ) is the 13th smartphone in Apple's iPhone series . The first generation was presented on March 21, 2016. It is similar to the iPhone 5s in both dimensions and appearance . The hardware is essentially the same as that of the iPhone 6s (except for 3D Touch and the front camera) . With this device, Apple fulfilled the wish for a 4-inch smartphone with the latest technology. In addition, it was offered at a lower price, so that it was also of interest to price-sensitive smartphone buyers and customers in emerging markets. The SE stands for Special Edition .

After the launch of the iPhone XR and iPhone XS , the iPhone SE was discontinued on September 12, 2018 after two and a half years (together with the iPhone 6s , 6s Plus and iPhone X ).

On April 15, 2020, Apple presented the 2nd generation of the iPhone SE. It has the same design and form factor as the iPhone 8. Compared to this, it offers various innovations such as a portrait camera and the A13 Bionic SoC.

design

The design of the iPhone SE is almost identical to that of the iPhone 5s , which was released in 2013 . The only visible differences are the beveled edges, which are matte in the SE, and the Apple logo on the back, which looks slightly different in the iPhone SE depending on the device color. In addition, the housing colors are a little lighter than the iPhone 5s. The device is available in space gray , silver , gold and rose gold .

technology

Back of the iPhone SE

The iPhone SE hosts, as the iPhone 6s , the in-house Apple A9 - system on a chip (SoC) and the M9 co-processor . There is also 2 gigabytes of RAM (instead of 1 GB as with the iPhone 5s). The Retina display with a screen diagonal of 10.16 cm (4 inches) has a point density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi), like that of the iPhone 5s.

The SE has a 12 megapixel camera. The front camera has a resolution of 1.2 megapixels. It is possible to create 4K and slow motion videos as well as live photos. However, there is no optical zoom and image stabilization function. The device supports Near Field Communication (NFC), but not the " 3D Touch " function known from the iPhone 6s , with which various functions can be triggered by pressing the screen with varying degrees of force.

The iPhone SE is available with either 16, 32, 64 or 128 GB of memory. The price for the iPhone SE started at 489 euros when it was launched in Germany , in Austria the device was available from 479 euros, in Switzerland from 479 francs and in the USA from 399 US dollars (16 GB version). On September 12, 2017, the price was reduced to 409 euros for the 32 GB version and 519 euros for the 128 GB version.

IOS 9.3 was installed on the device at the start of sales .

Fingerprint sensor

In the iPhone SE, Apple did not use the latest version of its Touch ID fingerprint sensor as in the iPhone 6s , but the somewhat slower version from the iPhone 6 and 5s . It can be used to unlock the device or to authorize purchases in the App Store and via Apple Pay .

WLAN and cellular networks

With the iPhone SE, transmission rates of up to 150 Mbit / s are possible via LTE , and up to 433 Mbit / s with the WLAN 802.11ac module.

Availability

The iPhone SE was available for pre-order in many European countries and the USA from March 24, 2016 and was shipped from March 31. As of May 2016, the iPhone SE was available in more than 100 countries.

With the introduction of new iPhones on September 12, 2018, the iPhone SE was no longer available from Apple.
