The iPhone 5c ( own spelling with ? or small caps ) is a smartphone the iPhone series of US company Apple . It was introduced at the same time as the iPhone 5s in 2013 . Most of the hardware was carried over from the iPhone 5 from the previous year. The device is functionally based on the in-house operating system Apple iOS and can be operated by the user mainly by touching the fingers on the multi-touch screen . The operating system version when it was launched was 7.0, the last version is 10.3.3. It was offered in five colors with 8, 16 or 32 GB flash memory from September 20, 2013, at the same time as the iPhone 5s in Germany (8 GB version in Germany since March 17, 2014). In October 2013 the iPhone 5c was also available in Switzerland and Austria.
history
The device and all the essential technical details were first presented by the manufacturer on September 10, 2013 as part of an Apple Special Event in Cupertino , just a few days before the planned start of sales on September 20. The iPhone 5s was also shown for the first time in this context . The product presentation was led by Apple manager Phil Schiller and generated extensive press coverage worldwide.
The iPhone 5c could be pre-ordered from the manufacturer a week before the start of sales. The exact origin of the model name "5c" is not known. Due to the different color variants of the iPhone 5c, one possible meaning could be “color”, which means color in American English .
Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted that demand was "different from what we thought". Larger sales were expected.
On March 18, 2014, Apple introduced a smaller 8 GB version of the iPhone 5c for Germany, France, Great Britain, Australia and China. Apple was hoping for higher sales figures in the mid-range smartphone price segment. In addition, as an LTE phone, it should be an alternative to the iPhone 4s, which does not have LTE.
design
The design of the iPhone 5c is based on the iOS 7 operating system. The smooth polycarbonate housing , the sides of which are rounded towards the back, is available in the five colors blue, yellow, pink, green and white. The front is black for all color variants. Apple already used the concept of the plastic back cover in 2008 and 2009 for its predecessors, the iPhone 3G and 3GS .
Together with the iPhone 5c, a protective cover was presented that is made of rubber and has 5 × 7 (35) holes on the back. The protective covers are available in six colors, so that a total of 30 color combinations of iPhone and protective cover are possible.
The device is a little thicker than the previous iPhone 5 and also weighs a little more.
The on / off / standby button is located on the upper narrow side on the right, and on the left side, starting from the top, there is a mute switch, volume up and down buttons. Headphones are on the lower narrow side of the left jack , microphone, Lightning - interface and the speaker . The front camera is located on top of the glass front , below the speakerphone and to the left of it the ambient light sensor . The multi-touch screen takes up a large part , including the indented home button. The home button does not have a fingerprint scanner like the iPhone 5s , but is curved inwards and has a square with rounded corners on it. On the back is the 8-megapixel camera on the top left, another microphone and the flash on the right .

The device has been available with 16 or 32 GB flash memory since the market launch, and an 8 GB version was sold in Germany on March 18, 2014. The touchscreen (manufacturer's name Retina display ) has a resolution of 1136 × 640 pixels with a diagonal of 101.6 mm (4 inches) in 16: 9 format. This corresponds to a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi). The surface of the screen is made of tough special glass.
The device has the in-house Apple A6 - SoC as a processing unit for user applications. The range of functions and the other technical specifications are identical to the specifications of the iPhone 5 , but the 1510 mAh battery is 70 mAh larger than the battery of the iPhone 5. In addition, the iPhone 5c was released much later, at the same time as the 5s .
The rear-exposed camera (rear camera, manufacturer's name Apple iSight ) takes photos with eight megapixels and videos in full HD . Unlike the iPhone 5s, slow-motion recordings are not possible. The front video camera with the so-called FaceTime video system has 1.2 megapixel resolution and can record video recordings with a resolution of 720p (1280 × 720 pixels).
The device supports the LTE networks of the network operators Deutsche Telekom , Vodafone , E-Plus and O 2 .
Like the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5c now supports nano SIM cards .
The built-in lithium-ion battery (3.8 V, 5.73 Wh (1510 mAh)) promises a talk time of up to 10 hours with 3G network and up to 250 hours of standby mode, according to the manufacturer.
Dispute over decryption
The data security of the iPhone 5c became a major political issue after December 2015. Both assassins were killed in the Islamist-motivated terrorist attack in San Bernardino on December 2, 2015. One of the assassins, Syed Rizwan Farook, left an iPhone 5c, but it was locked with a 4-digit PIN code. After 10 incorrect PIN entries, access to the data will be permanently deleted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) then asked Apple to provide the FBI with the necessary information to bypass the PIN lock. Apple refused to provide the FBI with the information, citing the obligation to protect the data of its customers. In this attitude, other large IT companies such as Microsoft , Facebook , Yahoo! , Twitter , and LinkedIn supports. On February 16, 2016, the FBI obtained an order from a federal judge ordering Apple to help the FBI bypass the PIN lock. However, Apple continued to refuse to assist the FBI in this way. On March 29, 2016, the FBI announced that its software specialists had found a way to bypass the PIN lock without the help of Apple.
