The iPhone 3GS (proper spelling with ? or small caps ) is the third smartphone the iPhone series from Apple . Marketing director Phil Schiller presented it to the public on June 8, 2009 as part of WWDC 2009 in the Moscone Center in San Francisco .
The iPhone 3GS uses Apple's iOS , which is also used on the iPad and iPod touch . When it was introduced, version 3.0 was included, the highest version supported by Apple is 6.1.6. The iPhone 3GS is mainly operated by finger touches on the multi-touch screen . The "S" in the model name of the iPhone stands for "Speed" ( German speed ).
design
The device has the same design as its predecessor. The back is made of glossy plastic in white or black - since the successor was released, it has only been delivered in black. The only visible difference to the previous model is the lettering and the disposal symbols on the back, which are now engraved glossy instead of matt.
Technical specifications
The internet connection has been accelerated compared to the previous model. The iPhone 3GS offers a download transfer speed of up to 7.2 Mbit / s instead of 3.6 Mbit / s with HSDPA .
For the first time, the device has built in a magnetometer and thus has a digital compass.
The iPhone 3GS offers better 3D graphics by supporting the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard . The SoC is a Samsung S5PC100 ( S5L8920 ) with a Cortex-A8 processor from ARM Limited clocked at 600 MHz . A PowerVR-SGX-535 GPU is used as the graphics processor .
Its main memory is 256 MB. The NAND flash memory for data amounts to 16 or 32 GB (with the introduction of the successor model only 8 GB). The battery life has increased compared to its predecessors.
The iPhone 3GS is the last iPhone to have NOR flash . With the help of the NOR, the main processor of the iPhone can start. The modem of the iPhone also uses the NOR. The iPod touch the third generation already used the slightly improved S5L8922 SoC which no NOR required to start more.
Digital camera
The 3- megapixel camera with camera sensors from OmniVision offers video recording and video editing functions compared to the iPhone 3G. The camera records a maximum of 30 frames per second at 480p . It has an autofocus , an automatic white balance and an automatic macro function for close-ups. In addition, the camera sensors produce sharper images with wavefront coding technology.
Sales figures
The iPhone 3GS sold over a million units in the first weekend of its launch. It reached its first million units sold just as quickly as its predecessor iPhone 3G.
