The iPhone 5 is the sixth smartphone in the iPhone series from the US company Apple and was presented by Phil Schiller on September 12, 2012 .

The manufacturer's own iOS 6.0 or higher operating system is used on the iPhone 5 . It is mainly operated by finger touches on the multi-touch screen .

The iPhone 5 was launched on September 21, 2012 in Germany and on September 28, 2012 in Liechtenstein , Austria and Switzerland in black and white with 16, 32 or 64  GB . According to Apple, five million devices were sold worldwide on the first weekend.

Sales were officially discontinued when the successor iPhone 5s was released on September 10, 2013.

description

Easy to see: the front pane protrudes from the frame.

The frame of the black iPhone is anthracite , while that of the white iPhone is silver. The back is made of anodized aluminum and glass. The device is around one centimeter longer, 1.7 millimeters thinner and 28 grams lighter than the previous iPhone 4s .

technology

The “ Retina Displaytouch screen of the iPhone 5 has a resolution of 640 × 1136 pixels with a diagonal of 100 mm (approx. 4 inches) ( 16: 9 format). This corresponds to a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi) . In addition, the surface of the screen of resistant Gorilla glass , which with alkali - aluminum silicate is manufactured.

The device has the Apple A6 - SoC , for the Apple says up to twice as much (graphics) performance A5 is to have the predecessor. It is the first iPhone to support the Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular standard. In Germany, theoretical transmission speeds of up to 100  Mbit / s should be achieved, but only the frequency band around 1800  MHz is supported. Initially, this could only be used in the Deutsche Telekom network, and even there only in parts of Germany (as of July 2013). This restriction to the LTE network of Telekom is competition-distorting and would represent a limitation compared to competitors, so the opinion of the mobile phone providers Vodafone and O 2 . They argued that, according to availability maps, the Telekom network had clear gaps in the 1800 MHz range. E-Plus and Vodafone are now also using the 1800 MHz band for LTE. LTE network can also be used in Switzerland since the iOS 6.1 update.

The so-called iSight camera (rear camera) has a sensor with eight megapixels and records full HD videos at 30 frames per second. It also enables panoramic photos to be taken. The FaceTime camera (front camera) has a 1.2 megapixel resolution for the first time and was placed in the center above the receiver. Video recordings are also recorded by this camera in 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. The iPhone 5 is able to take photos with a resolution of 2 megapixels while recording video.

The iPhone 5 has the Lightning connector with eight contact pins, the plug of which can be connected in any direction and replaces the wider dock connector of the previous models. Adapters for the old connection or micro-USB are optionally available . The Apple Lightning cable contains a chip to identify connected devices. Apple also confirmed that the eight pins are completely digital and adaptive and can be reprogrammed at will. A new headphone model called EarPods is included , which replaces the Earphones as a successor.

With iOS 6 , among other things, the Siri software was expanded and linked to the Yelp network, which can suggest restaurants in the vicinity. In addition, Apple's own map application Apple Maps has been integrated.

The iPhone 5 does not support micro-SIM cards , but now nano-SIM cards .

The built-in lithium-ion battery (3.8 V; 5.45 Wh (1440 mAh)) promises a talk time of up to 8 hours with 3G network and up to 225 hours of standby mode, according to the manufacturer.

Telephony

For the first time, the iPhone is equipped with three microphones that enable the device to filter out disturbing ambient noises. In addition, the device can establish calls with improved quality via HD telephony , provided it is logged into the UMTS network of Deutsche Telekom or Vodafone and the partner also has an HD telephony-capable device. Apple announced that 20 network providers worldwide support HD telephony so far, including Deutsche Telekom, which uses the AMR-WB codec.

criticism

Processing errors

On the black version, strong signs of wear and tear were found at the edges (“scuff gate”), which can be attributed to a processing error.

The new connector for the Lightning data cable is also criticized. In order to continue to use devices with the old connection, it is necessary to purchase an adapter separately. With some accessories (e.g. music systems or charging stations) there is insufficient space for the adapter and the iPhone and the iPhone can no longer be operated with the accessories. Apple seems to want to use the Lightning interface for ten years since its introduction.

In Germany, the LTE interface of the iPhone 5 works with a theoretical maximum data rate of 100 megabits per second (Mbit / s) when downloading exclusively in the Deutsche Telekom network. According to the Bonn-based company, the LTE network in the 1800-megahertz frequency range that the iPhone 5 can process should be expanded in around 100 cities nationwide by the end of 2012. Due to the given frequency band restriction, many cell phone providers in other member states of the European Union can not offer iPhone 5 owners an LTE network. The iPhone 5 uses the Qualcomm MDM9615 modem. The successor, the iPhone 5s , also uses this, but in the Federal Republic of Germany it also supports the LTE frequency bands of other providers than Deutsche Telekom due to a different transceiver.

Buyers criticize that a purple glow around the subject is visible in photos and videos with strong backlight. Apple has announced that the problem is not solvable. Experts believe that the new sapphire crystal cover is responsible for this.

In its online edition test.de, Stiftung Warentest praised the screen and the camera as very good, but criticized the scratch sensitivity, the in-house navigation app, which could be improved, and the mediocre battery, which only showed two and a half hours of running time when surfing the Internet via UMTS .
