The iPhone 4 is the fourth smartphone in the iPhone series from the US company Apple . It was unveiled on June 7, 2010 and was first available in the United States, United Kingdom , Japan , France and Germany on June 24, 2010 . It is mainly operated by finger touches on the multi-touch screen . Apple's iOS 4 to 7 operating system is used on the device .
design
The housing consists of a rustproof stainless steel frame that also functions as an antenna. The front and back are made of a sealed and scratch-resistant special glass from Corning (manufacturer's name Gorilla Glass ). The device was initially only available in black, and since April 28, 2011 also in white. Compared to the iPhone 3GS , it is smaller in height, width and depth. With a depth of 9.3 millimeters, for example, it is around 24% thinner.

Cellular communications and networking
The iPhone 4 offers UMTS data transmission via HSUPA at a speed of up to 5.7 Mbps. It now also supports Wi-Fi 4, but only in the sometimes heavily frequented 2.4 GHz band . A micro SIM card is required for operation.
The CEO Steve Jobs rejected the reception problems of the smartphone discussed in the media and referred to a general impairment of reception of smartphones when the device is firmly held in the hand. This statement, together with the admission of a software calculation error that has appeared on iOS since the iPhone 3G , has caused outrage among many competitors.
Since February 10, 2011, the American wireless operator Verizon Wireless has also been selling the iPhone 4 in the USA; this variant uses the CDMA2000 cellular standard used by Verizon Wireless instead of GSM / UMTS . Verizon's competitor AT&T has had to contend with overload and poor coverage of its 3G cellular networks since the introduction of the iPhone. In order to underpin the reliability and network coverage of its own networks, Verizon Wireless also explicitly advertises the hotspot function included in the iPhone operating system iOS from version 4.2.5 . This enables the creation of a WLAN hotspot, which up to five users can log into and use the iPhone's internet connection. The CDMA2000-iPhone has another antenna segment in the steel frame that is supposed to counteract reception problems. This antenna design was adopted for the successor, the iPhone 4s . An additional microphone filters out ambient noise and thus improves the voice quality.
Digital and front camera
The digital camera can take photos with a resolution of 2592 × 1936 pixels (five megapixels) and videos with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels ( HD ) at 30 fps and has an LED flash and five times digital zoom. For the first time in cell phones, the sensor allows rearward exposure , with the sensor system being on the back of the sensor, thereby increasing light sensitivity. There is also another VGA camera on the front of the device , which is required for the FaceTime function (audio and video telephony). It can take photos and videos with a resolution of 640 × 480 pixels, videos at 30 fps .
System-on-a-chip
The Apple A4, already known from the first generation iPad and manufactured by Samsung, with a reduced core clock of 800 MHz instead of 1 GHz, is used as a system-on-a-chip . It connects CPU (with ARM architecture ), GPU and other parts according to the system-on-a-chip principle. A modified battery in combination with the new processor should extend the runtimes by up to 40% compared to that of the iPhone 3GS .
Data storage
Depending on the version, the device had 16 or 32 GB of NAND flash memory for any data and 512 MB of RAM - twice as much as the first-generation iPad and its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS. With the introduction of the successor iPhone 4s, the iPhone 4 was only available with 8 GB of flash memory.
screen
Apple calls the 3.5-inch screen a “ retina display ” because, at 326 ppi (960 × 640 pixels), it displays more pixels than the eye can see at a normal viewing distance (around 25 to 30 cm). Compared to the previous model with 480 × 320 pixels, the number of pixels has been quadrupled. On the iPhone 4, fonts in particular should benefit from this and be displayed much sharper. The Retina display also uses in-plane switching technology, which Apple is already using in the Apple Cinema Display , the iMac and the first-generation iPad. It ensures a wider viewing angle than a conventional TN display. According to Apple, the contrast of the screen should be 800: 1, but with new devices it is even over 1100: 1 with a maximum brightness of well over 500 cd / m² .
gyroscope
Apple has added a three-axis gyroscope to the acceleration sensor on the iPhone 4 , which records rotations around all three spatial axes ( height , width , depth ) and offers new possibilities, especially for games.
Video telephony
The iPhone 4 is the first iPhone to offer FaceTime video calling . This was presented in real time by Apple at WWDC in June 2010. FaceTime was initially only possible via WiFi , but was later extended to cellular networks with the introduction of iOS 6. The prerequisite for this is support from the respective network provider. With the introduction of iOS 7, FaceTime was expanded to include phone calls without video transmission (FaceTime audio) .
Marketing and sales
The device was presented on June 7, 2010 as part of WWDC 2010 in the Moscone Center of San Francisco . It hit stores in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France, and Germany on June 24, 2010.
The start of sales was initially postponed due to the high demand of over 600,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours. Apple said it did not expect such demand. According to Apple , the iPhone 4 was sold 1.7 million times in the first three days of sales, 700,000 more than the iPhone 3GS in the previous year. The market research company iSuppli put the pure manufacturing and material costs of the iPhone 4 at US $ 188 each. However, this does not include research and development , taxes , sales , import and export .
The successor device is the iPhone 4s , which came onto the market in October 2011.
criticism
At the end of June 2010, reports of reception problems with the new iPhone caused a stir. Two buyers filed a class action lawsuit against Apple and AT&T before the District Court of the US state of Maryland , as various iPhone 4 users complained about alleged reception problems. Apple initially stated that there were no unusual reception problems, rather that the reception indicator sometimes does not correctly reflect the signal strength due to a calculation error in the software. Apple also states that the declining reception is known from other cell phones with a similar antenna design and that basically everything is fine. Apple has released an update (4.0.1) to correctly display the reception strength. Experts from the US American trade journal Consumer Reports were able to confirm the reception problems with left-handers and thus a design error in a laboratory test with a simulated cell phone cell and therefore did not recommend a purchase. Apple later announced that the reception problems could not be resolved with a software update. Consumer Reports advised buyers to fix the problem with tape or use a cell phone case. At a press conference on July 16, 2010, Apple offered all iPhone 4 buyers either a reverse transaction with a full refund of the purchase price or a free case (“iPhone bumper”). Users who had already bought one were compensated with a subsequent credit; new buyers received a case of their choice free of charge as part of the iPhone 4 case program , which expired at the end of September 2010. On January 11, 2011, Apple and Verizon Wireless presented an iPhone version adapted for the CDMA2000 cellular standard, which, according to a technical specification for the Verizon cellular network, has two antennas and, according to various reports, had significantly fewer reception problems compared to the GSM / UMTS model .
After the update to iOS 7, numerous users complained about speed problems with the iPhone 4. These were largely remedied by Apple with the update to iOS 7.1. According to a test by Ars Technica , the iPhone 4 with iOS 7.1 is significantly faster than with iOS 7.0, but does not reach the speed of iOS 6.1.3.
