The Corning, Inc. is a company from the United States , based in Corning, New York . The company, which is listed in the S&P 500 share index , employs around 35,700 people and produces glass, ceramics and related materials for industrial and scientific applications.

history

The company was founded in the Williamsburg (Brooklyn) area in 1851 and moved to Corning. Until 1989 the company was known as Corning Glass Works .

A process developed at Corning by Stuart Dockerty (1911–1974) and Clint Shay in 1964 ( overflow fusion or down draw ) for the production of very thin and uniform panes of glass could not initially be used commercially, but has enabled the production of LCD panels since the 1990s. Screens and, since the mid-2000s, touch screens.

In the fall of 1970, Corning announced that the company's developers had successfully made fiber optic cables suitable for long distance transmission. With this invention, Corning became one of the world's largest manufacturers of fiber optic cables in the 1990s.

Due to the strong expansion of the production of Gorilla Glass (see below) , the factory in Harrodsburg has been expanded for around US $ 180 million since 2010.

Divisions

Corning is divided into five segments:

  • Screen technology Display Technologies (45% of sales)
with the production of glass for liquid crystal screens in notebooks, flat screens for PCs and LCD televisions
  • Telecommunications Telecommunications (31% of sales)
with the production of fiber optics , fiber optic cables and complete cabling systems for data transmission
  • Environmental Technology Environmental Technologies (11% of sales)
with the manufacture of ceramic products for emission control in mobile and stationary applications (use in catalytic converters and particle filters )
  • Specialty Materials (6% of sales)
with a wide range of special ingredients for formulations in glasses, glass ceramics (e.g. Pyrex ) and hydrogen fluoride crystals with applications in a wide variety of industries
  • Life Science (7% of sales)
with the development and production of scientific laboratory equipment.

Holdings

Samsung Corning Precision Glass, a highly profitable manufacturer of liquid crystal glass for the production of LCD screens, belongs to Corning .

Through June 1, 2016, Corning held 50% of Dow Corning , the former joint venture with Dow Chemical . Dow Corning is the world leader in silicon and silicon chemistry and the majority owner of Hemlock Semiconductor.

Corning in Germany

In Germany, Corning has branches in Berlin , Hagen , Kaiserslautern , Munich , Krailling , Neustadt bei Coburg , Hanover and Wiesbaden . One of the world's four main plants for ceramic substrates in catalysts ( Environmental Technologies division ) with around 1000 employees is located in Kaiserslautern . In addition, the substrates for the new gasoline particulate filters (GPF) are manufactured in Kaiserslautern.

Gorilla Glass and Willow Glass

One of the best-known products from Corning is Gorilla Glass , an aluminosilicate glass 0.7–2 mm thick. Gorilla Glass hit the market in 2007 in the first iPhone . Since then it has been used in over 500 million smartphones , tablet PCs and netbooks from more than 30 manufacturers in over 575 models; Gorilla Glass is characterized by improved break resistance and high scratch resistance. Willow Glass is a very much thinner, flexible borosilicate glass developed for similar applications, but with a thickness of 0.1–0.2 mm .
