history

During the war , with the technical progress in aviation, the moisture condensing and freezing on engines and instruments at high altitudes became a major obstacle and led to numerous accidents. Around 1942, Shailer Bass developed the first product for Dow Corning, a simple silicone grease ( Dow Corning # 4 Compound ) that solved the problem. Dow Corning was officially founded the following year, 1943, specifically to investigate and exploit the potential of silicone.

In 1945, the Midland, Michigan plant opened. In the following years, the product range was expanded and another plant for end products was opened in Greensboro (North Carolina) . In 1959 it was possible to produce high-purity polysilicon for the first time - Hemlock (Michigan) became the location of the first polysilicon plant. In 1964 Alpha Molykote , a company specializing in lubricants, was bought. The properties of Molykote and Silicones have been combined to create improved lubricants.

In 1966, Dow Corning formed joint ventures with Toray Silicone and Shin-Etsu Handotai to expand into Japan . In the years that followed, Dow Corning developed numerous medical applications, but also materials that are used in space travel or the automotive industry.

In 1995 Dow Corning filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy - thousands of lawsuits and claims for damages related to breast implants threaten the company's viability. After the establishment of a security fund of several billion US dollars and the reinsurance by the mothers Dow Chemicals and Corning , Dow Corning was released from Chapter 11 in 2004. A direct link between breast cancer or autoimmune diseases and silicone implants has not been established.

In 2002, Xiameter was founded as a new brand for standard products, these should be sold via an online platform.

Dow Corning continued to expand over the next several years, particularly in China and India.

In December 2015, Dow Chemical announced that it would acquire all of its stake in Dow Corning as part of the merger with DuPont .

Hemlock Semiconductor

Hemlock was founded in 1960 and began producing polycrystalline silicon in Midland in 1961 . Hemlock supplies the semiconductor and solar industries with polysilicon.
