Midland is a city in the US state of Michigan in the Tri-Cities Region of the state. The city is the county seat of Midland County . Most of the city is incorporated into the Midland Township. A small part of the city is in Bay County . According to an estimate, there were 42,096 residents in the city in 2016.

history

The Dow Chemical Company was founded in Midland in 1897 . The headquarters of the resulting Dow, Inc. is still here today . A town twinning was concluded with this city through the opening of a Dow plant in Handa , Japan. The Dow Corning Corporation and the Chemical Bank also had their headquarters in Midland.

On May 19, 2020, after heavy rains, the Edenville and Sanford dams (both located above Midland on the Tittabawassee River ) broke, flooding the city. About 10,000 people had to leave their homes.

There are no regular public transport facilities. Residents can order a so-called subsidized “Dial-A-Ride” in the city or a “County Connection” outside of the city for a fixed fee. There are a small number of taxis that can be ordered over the phone.

Midland Center for the Arts.

Midland offers a wide variety of cultural, musical, scientific and artistic entertainment.

The Midland Center for the Arts features exhibits in science, art, and technology. The center is equipped with two modern auditoriums for 400 and 1500 spectators, where the Midland Symphony and Theater Guild perform, among others.

Midland has over 80 parks with a total of 12 km² of parkland. The parks have large picnic areas, children's play areas, a swimming pool and a large softball complex. The Civiv Arena offers ice skaters two NHL ice rinks and an ice rink according to the specifications of the Olympic Committee.

The city also offers facilities for walkers, joggers, BMX riders and golfers.

The former garden of the Dow founder, Herbert H. Dow, is open to the public and features an abundance of plants. The public library was donated by Grace A. Dow.

The Tridge, a three-way crossing bridge at the confluence of the Chippewa and Tittabawassee Rivers in Midland.

With over 100 places of worship, Midland has earned the nickname “City of Wonderful Churches”.

The Tridge is a pedestrian bridge in the city center that connects the banks at the confluence of the Chippewa River with the Tittabawassee River with three endpoints. The bridge was built in 1981. Construction costs were $ 732,000. The Tridge is next to the Midland Farmers Market and has become the city's landmark over the past several decades. The bridge is illuminated at night.
