The Chemical Financial Corporation is a holding company with the Chemical Bank claims to own the largest bank in Michigan. The company is headquartered in Detroit and has offices outside Michigan in Ohio and Indiana. The institute was founded in 1917 as the Chemical State Savings Bank in Midland . In 1937 the main office became the scene of a bank robbery, as a result of which the perpetrator Anthony Chebatoris was sentenced to death under federal law. He was the last person to be executed within Michigan's borders. Since 1974 the bank has operated as Chemical Bank . In 2018 Chemical announced plans to move its headquarters from Midland to Detroit. Chemical Financial Corporation is part of the NASDAQ Financial 100 index.

In January 2019, a merger intention between Chemical Financial Corporation and TCF Financial Corporation was announced. The merged company will operate under the TCF Bank brand and will be headquartered in Detroit. In February 2019 it was announced that Chemical Bank had taken over the naming rights of the Cobo Center for 22 years. The Chemical Bank plans to pay $ 1.5 million a year for this. After a successful merger with TCF Financial Corporation, the new name TCF Center should be adopted.
