Mount Pleasant is a city in the US state of Michigan and the county seat of Isabella County . The 2000 census counted 25,946 inhabitants, in 2008 26,675.
Part of the city is on the Isabella Indian Reservation , the site of the Soaring Eagle Casino . The city is home to the main campus of Central Michigan University . Former Michigan Governor John Engler was born in Mount Pleasant, as was former PGA Tour pro golfer Dan Pohl.
In December 2008, the Mount Pleasant unemployment rate was 7.1%.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a land area of 20.2 km 2 . The city is traversed by the Chippewa River. Mount Pleasant is about 98 km north of Lansing , the state capital of Michigan, which is located on US 127.
history
The area of what is now Mount Pleasant was settled under the Graduation Act of 1854, which allowed settlers to buy land from the government at cheap rates. By the agreement of 1855 the Anishinabe (Chippewa Saginaw tribe) from Saginaw , Swan Creek and Black River were resettled in Isabella County Land (Isabella Indian Reservation). As a result, many settlers moved to Mount Pleasant for good business relationships with the Indians. The Homestead Act of 1862 brought many new settlers to Mount Pleasant who lived in the open land for the government's approval.
A fire in 1875, which broke out in the Fancher building on the north corner of Broadway and Main and stretched east down Broadway, destroyed several buildings in the city. Seven years later, a fire damaged other buildings on the south side of Broadway.
In 1879, the first library opened in Mount Pleasant , The Library, Literary, and Musical Association of Mount Pleasant , initially consisting of the board members' personal book collections. In 1890, WA Jordan founded Mount Pleasant Business College , which became today's Central Michigan University .
On January 3, 1893, the US government opened an Indian boarding school in Mount Pleasant, the Pleasant Indian Industrial School , which was closed in 1933. 76 years later, on July 17, 2009, The White Bison Wellbriety Journey for Forgiveness stopped in Mount Pleasant to commemorate this part of the city's history.
In 1928, the town experienced an oil boom, almost 15 years after the day of the first drilling. The first oil was produced on Lilly Farm , several hundred barrels a day. As the workforce migrated to the oil industry, many local factories closed and left town in search of new workers.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 25,946 people in 8,449 households and 3,126 families lived in the city. The population density was 1284.3 per km 2 . There were 8,878 housing units at an average density of 439.5 per km 2 .
There were 8,449 households with children under the age of 18 living in 18.8% of the cases, 25.9% of whom were married and living together as a couple, 8.5% had a female householder without a husband, and 63.0% were none Familys. 29.6% of all households were single households and 8.8% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
The percentage age structure of the population was as follows: 11.5% were under 18 years of age, 54.1% 18 to 24, 16.9% 25 to 44, 10.2% 45 to 64 and 7.3% were 65 years or older older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 82.4 males. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 80.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 24,572, and the median income for a family is $ 43,927. Males had a median income of $ 32,004 versus $ 23,869 for women. The per capita income for the city was $ 13,177. Over 11.4% of families and 37.2% of the population were below the poverty line, of which 14.8% were young people under the age of 18 and 7.6% were in the age group 65 years or older.
