Handa ( Japanese 半 田 市 , - shi ) is a coastal town in Aichi Prefecture , about 40 km south of Nagoya , on Honshū , the main island of Japan , between Mikawa Bay and Ise Bay . It is an important trading center, with shipbuilding as the main industry.

history

The independent city ( shi ) Handa was formed on October 1, 1937 from the district cities ( chō ) Handa ( 半 田 町 ), Kamezaki ( 亀 崎 町 ) and Narawa ( 成岩 町 ). Since then, the city has been hit by two major earthquakes , a typhoon and a flood.
