Toyohashi ( Japanese 豊 橋 市 , - shi ) is a city in Aichi Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

Toyohashi is located on Mikawa Bay on the Pacific, southeast of Nagoya .
history
Toyohashi, an old castle town from the 15th century, was originally called Yoshida ( 吉田 ). The first lord of the castle, Makino Noritoki, was killed in 1506, after which his property fell to the Imagawa clan . More eventful years followed, until the castle under the Tokugawa was successively sold to the Takenoya-Matsudaira (1601), Fukōzu-Matsudaira (1612), Mizuno (1632), Ogasawara (1645), Kuze (1697), Makino (1705), Ōkouchi (1712) and Honjō (1749) fell and was then ruled from 1752 until the Meiji Restoration by the Ōkouchi with an income of 73,000 Koku .
During the Second World War , the city was repeatedly bombed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) between January 1945 and June 1945 . The attack with the most serious consequences was an area bombing with napalm bombs on June 20, 1945. The attack destroyed around 62% of the urban area, claimed 650 deaths and made 15,866 people homeless (see air raids on Japan ).

traffic
The most important east-west railway connections in the country, the Tōkaidō Main Line and the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, run through Toyohashi . They are both operated by JR Central and connect the city with, among others, Tokyo , Yokohama , Nagoya , Kyōto , Osaka , Hiroshima and Fukuoka . The Toyohashi Station is also the starting point of the Iida Line the same company after Tatsuno in Nagano Prefecture . The prefecture capital Nagoya can also be reached via the Meitetsu Nagoya main line operated by Nagoya Tetsudō . The company Toyohashi Tetsudō is responsible for local transport . Next to bus lines also operates the tram Toyohashi and from the train station Shin-Toyohashi circulating from Atsumi line .
By road, the city can be reached on the one hand via the Tōmei motorway towards Tokyo or Nagoya, and on the other hand via National Road 1 .

The Toyohashi Port Facility is part of Mikawa Port, the largest Japanese import port for automobiles and the like. a. the manufacturers Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi, Ford, Porsche. About half of all automobile imports into Japan are made through this port. As an export port for automobiles from the Japanese manufacturers Toyota, Suzuki and Mitsubishi, the port of Mikawa is the largest in terms of turnover and the second largest in terms of number of items in Japan. The Volkswagen Group Japan and Volvo Cars Japan each have their headquarters in Toyohashi in Japan.
In addition to mechanical engineering, there are plastics, wood, metal and textile industries .
Among the most famous products from Toyohashi, the Toyohashi-fude calligraphy brushes are worth mentioning. 80% of the high quality calligraphy brushes sold in Japan are made in Toyohashi.
