Inuyama ( Japanese 犬 山 市 , - shi , literally: Hundsberg ) is a city in the north of Aichi Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .
geography

history
Inuyama is an old castle town . The place received city rights on April 1, 1954 from the merger of the municipality Inuyama with four other villages.
Attractions
Inuyama Castle
Inuyama Castle rises 40 meters above the city and overlooks the Kiso River. It is also known as Hakutei-jō (Castle of the White Emperor), named after the Confucian scholar Ogyū Sorai during the Edo period . It consists of four floors with two basement floors, but has only three roof groups. The castle was declared a National Treasure of Japan in 1935 and again in 1952.
Its current appearance comes from Oda Nobuyasu , Oda Nobunaga's grandfather , who had the castle built in 1537. After completion, their owners changed quickly one after the other. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi took control of the area, he turned the management of the castle over to Ishikawa Sadakiyo . After Hideyoshi's defeat by Matsudaira Tadayoshi , it passed to Ogasawara Yoshitsugu . It was owned by the Naruse family from 1616 to the Meiji period ; after the Meiji Restoration , it was confiscated by the government in 1869.
The castle was damaged during the great Nobi earthquake in 1891. Under the condition that the necessary repairs were carried out, it was returned to the Naruse family and is the only castle in Japan in private hands. Due to the fortunate coincidence that it has never been destroyed since its construction despite all the wars, it is today the oldest original castle in Japan that is made of wood .
Uraku garden
This landmark (Japanese Uraku-en ) is known as the tea garden for the Japanese tea ceremony . In the garden there is the Joan tea house , which was built by Oda Uraku (1547–1621, younger brother of Oda Nobunaga ) in 1618. The tea master Oda Uraku was a student of the famous tea master Sen no Rikyu . Although the Joan Teahouse was originally built in the then capital Kyoto , it was dismantled there in 1972 and rebuilt in Inuyama. The building is considered to be one of the best examples of teahouse architecture .
Kiso River
The Kiso River has some very picturesque rapids upstream from the castle. These rapids with the rocks become Nihon Rhine , i.e. H. Called the Japanese Rhine because of the similarity of the German river Rhine. For tourist boat trips and Cormorant - Fishing offered.
Meiji-Mura Open Air Museum
A little outside the city is the Meiji Mura open-air museum ( 明治 村 ), which preserves and exhibits selected buildings from the Meiji period (1867–1912). There are more than 60 historical buildings on over one square kilometer, including the main entrance and lobby of the original Imperial Hotel of Tokyo as the main attraction . It was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and construction was completed in 1923. However, it was badly damaged by the great earthquake in the same year.
Little World open air museum
Another open-air museum and amusement park is located in the vicinity of the city, the Little World. As an anthropological museum, buildings were built there that show the original architectural style of the natives of 22 countries worldwide, including a Bavarian village , Korean farmhouses or South American residential huts.
Japan Monkey Park amusement park
Another amusement park is the Monkey Park with different species of monkeys and amusement options.
