Kiyosu ( Japanese 清 須 市 , - shi ) is a city in Aichi Prefecture in Japan , north of Nagoya .

geography

Kiyosu is northwest of Nagoya .

history

The city was created on July 7, 2005 by merging the three communities Kiyosu ( 清 洲 町 , -chō ), Shinkawa ( 新 川 町 , -chō ) and Nishibiwajima ( 西 枇杷 島 町 , -chō ). On October 1, 2009, Haruhi was incorporated from the Nishikasugai-gun .

Kiyosu Castle

Kiyosu is best known for its castle. It was built at the beginning of the Muromachi period as a "partner castle" of Shimozu Castle in Inazawa . Shimozu burned down in 1476, and Kiyosu then became the political center of Owari Province (northern part of today's Aichi Prefecture). In 1555 Oda Nobunaga moved from Nagoya to Kiyosu Castle and led numerous campaigns from there. After his death, his second son Nubukatsu took over the castle. After extensions, the castle grounds extended over an area of 1.6 by 2.8 km in 1586. In 1610, Tokugawa Ieyasu relocated the government seat of Owari Province back to Nagoya, and Kiyosu Castle was largely demolished to rebuild Nagoya. By 1613, about 60,000 people moved from Kiyosu to Nagoya, Kiyosu was able to maintain a certain importance as a post station town along the Mino Road (Nagoya to Ogaki ). The remains of Kiyosu Castle were destroyed by a flood of the Goji River in 1614.

The current building of Kiyosu Castle was completely rebuilt in 1989 and houses a museum.
