Akira Toriyama
Akira Toriyama ( Japanese 鳥 山 明 , Toriyama Akira ; born April 5, 1955 in Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture ) is a Japanese manga artist .
Life
Born in Aichi Prefecture on Honshū , the largest Japanese island, Akira Toriyama was an avid fan of comics and cartoons even as a child. With Walt Disney's 101 Dalmatians came the initial spark to pick up the pen and put the first drawings on paper.
Toriyama graduated from the Department of Design at the Prefectural Business School in 1974 and began working as a designer for a design company in advertising that same year until 1977. The following year he took part in the Shukan Shonen Jump monthly "Young Jump Prize" and made his debut as a draftsman with Wonder Island , a wondrous adventure story about a caveman, a witch and a king published in Weekly Shonen Jump .
In 1979 he began working on the manga series Dr. Slump , which appeared in the same magazine with great success. Toriyama received this 1982 27th Shogakukan Manga Award in the category Shōnen . His greatest success so far is the 42-volume manga series Dragonball, which was published between 1984 and 1995 . With 152 million copies sold in Japan alone (as of 2010), it is the second most successful manga series in history.
In 1983 Akira Toriyama founded his own drawing studio, Bird Studio, and is involved in the graphic design of characters in video games , including the Dragon Quest series and the 1995 square role-playing game Chrono Trigger . He was also responsible for the idiosyncratic design of the QVOLT , which the Japanese car manufacturer CQ Motors launched in March 2005.
In March 2004 Akira Toriyama was the guest of honor at the Leipzig Book Fair and, in addition to an interview, also gave a one-hour drawing workshop entitled How to Draw .
In January 2007 Shonen Jump published "Dragonball x One Piece: Cross Epoch", a new short story in collaboration with Eiichirō Oda , the artist of One Piece .
On August 24, 2007, the video game Blue Dragon by Mistwalker was released in Europe and he again worked on its graphic design.
In 2013 he received the special award at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême .
In 2017 it became known through the publications known as the " Panama Papers " that Toriyama was involved in business with an offshore company in tax depreciation objects .
