Chrono Trigger ( Japanese: ク ロ ノ ・ ト リ ガ ー , Kurono Torigā ) is a video game by the Japanese software company Square Enix and belongs to the genre of role-playing games . It was released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and somewhat revised in 2001 together with Final Fantasy IV under the name Final Fantasy Chronicles (not to be confused with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles ) for the Sony PlayStation . It was not released in Europe at the time, although it was quite popular and successful in the US as well. It wasn't until February 6, 2009 that Chrono Trigger appeared for the first time in Europe for the Nintendo DS . In May 2011, Square Enix announced the release of Chrono Trigger for the Virtual Console .

The character designer for Chrono Trigger was Akira Toriyama , who was created by Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump became known; the music was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu .

The successors to Chrono Trigger are the text adventure Radical Dreamers for the Satellaview and the Chrono Cross based on it for the PlayStation .

On July 31, 1996, the game was advertised at the V-Jump Festival with the 16-minute anime Jikū Bōken Nūmamonjā ( 時空 冒 険 ヌ ウ マ モ ン ~ ャ ~ , German: "Space-time adventure Nūmamonjā"). The film was created by Production IG .

An adaptation of Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo DS was released in winter 2008 . This offers a revised game system that supports touchscreen functionality , a new dungeon and a wireless mode . The game was released in Europe on February 6, 2009.

Game system

Chrono Trigger is a representative of the console role-playing games . The player controls the protagonists in a two-dimensionally represented fictional world, which consists of forests, cities and dungeons. The game is basically (with a few exceptions) from a bird's eye view on the one hand with a larger world map, which then changes to a more detailed dungeon view in certain areas, in which the player has to fight, solve puzzles and find objects in order to progress further in the game . Chrono Trigger has visible opponents, so in contrast to other role-playing games such as B. Final Fantasy in many places decide for yourself whether you want to fight or avoid the fight, but the fights are "forced" on the player in many places.

history

Chrono Trigger is about the protagonist Chrono and his friends who travel through time to save the future from an alien parasite called Lavos . In the course of the game they are joined by characters from different eras (in the order in which they appear):

  • the main character Chrono ( ク ロ ノ , Kurono ; 1000 AD)

Chrono is the main character in the story of "Chrono Trigger", which comes from the present there. In keeping with the style of the world-famous mangaka Akira Toriyama, he is a very muscular character and, despite his young age, an excellent fighter with his weapon, the katana. When he wants to visit his girlfriend Lucca at the “Millennium Festival”, his and Marle's paths cross and after she disappears through a time portal, he decides to follow her and bring her back. Finally he ends up with his friends in the future and learns about the existence of the space parasite "Lavos", which sleeps in the earth's core and will devastate the earth and make everything sterile almost 1000 years after Chronos. So he decides with the others to avert the fate of the world and begins his journey through the time periods in which he is joined by characters who could not be more different - and not only because they all come from another time. Like most of the others, Chrono masters an element that he can make usable through magic: the light, which he also uses in the form of electricity against his opponents.

  • the rebellious princess Marle ( マ ー ル , Māru ), actually Marledia ( マ ー ル デ ィ ア , Mārudia ; 1000 AD)

The very idiosyncratic protagonist of the story. Marle's real name is "Marledia"; she is the princess of Guardia, a kingdom of the western continent of Chrono Trigger. Apparently misunderstood by her father and because of the feeling of being locked in the castle, she flees and, protected by her new name, mingles with the people to meet Chrono. During a demonstration of Lucca and her new teleporter, her heirloom, a pendant that already belonged to her ancestor in the Middle Ages, reacts and opens a portal that draws her into the flow of time. In the past she has been mistaken for the queen, so she is temporarily safe. But shortly after Chrono's appearance they search for the real monarch and disappear again after ending up in the dungeon of the castle. In this way she reaches the future with the others and accompanies the hero and his companions on their journey. Marle's affection for Chrono is not only based on friendship, as it shows him again and again in the course of the story. While she can't add too much to combat with her crossbow, she's a great help when it comes to using white magic and her element of ice.

  • the ingenious inventor Lucca ( ル ッ カ , Rukka ; 1000 AD)

Lucca is about the same age as Chrono and has been his girlfriend since childhood. She is incredibly intelligent and, spurred on by her father's profession, a very talented inventor. Her appearance and her fondness for science and vehicles are strongly reminiscent of the character "Bulma" of the world-famous manga "Dragon Ball" by Akira Toriyama, from which the artwork Chrono Triggers comes. When she was a small child, her mother had an accident and lost her legs to one of her father's machines. Mostly because of the guilt that she couldn't help her, she felt obliged to follow in her father's footsteps and learn all there is to be learned about machines. Shortly after trying out her new teleportation device and making sure that the incident has nothing to do with her invention, she and Chrono travel back in time to save Marle. In the future, it comes at just the right time, when it is necessary to make the inactive Robo operational again and to continue to support the heroes with advice and action in the future. Like many of the other characters, she hopes to use the power of time travel for more than just saving the world - even if it is to undo the past. In combat, she uses a pistol and the element of fire.

  • the knight Frog ( カ エ ル , Kaeru , German: "frog"), actually Glenn ( グ レ ン , Guren ; 600 AD)

"Frog" is a legendary hero and swordsman from the Middle Ages. He owes his appearance to the "Demon Lord" Magus, who cast a spell on him and thus transformed him from a human into a frog-like creature. Since then he has had enormous thoughts of revenge and wants nothing more than to wipe out the magician. Not least because he lost his best friend and mentor, the brave knight Cyrus, through the witcher. However, in order to confront Magus and defeat him, the legendary “Masamune” blade is required, which he wants to get hold of and which he ultimately takes into his possession with the help of Chrono. Although he joins them, it remains his real goal to take revenge on Magus, to avenge his friend and perhaps even to break his curse. But like the others, he continues to develop and is faced with decisions that show him what is really important to him and what he may be able to forgive over time. Apart from his heroic swordsmanship, Frog fights - in keeping with his appearance - with the element of water.

  • the robot R-66Y , called "Robo" (2300 AD)

One of the robots from the future after the attack by Lavos. R-66Y, called "Robo" by the heroes, was built in the Geno-Dome and stationed in the Proto-Dome, where "he" was supposed to guard the locked gate to one of the time portals. Also known under the name "Prometheus", it was also created for the purpose of studying humans. After it "ran out of juice" and was found by the heroes, Lucca fixed it and he helped them. Unlike the other robots of the future, which are programmed to subjugate or wipe out the rest of the surviving humans in order to let the machines rule the future, he recognizes the goodness in them and opposes the others. So he helps them with any means and follows them every step of the way, so that he can not only stop Lavos, but possibly even tear up the root of all evil in the future himself, in other words the "head" of the whole thing, which the people there suppressed. Although Robo has no heart, which means that he cannot cast spells, in addition to his strong physical attacks, his projectiles and beam attacks are shadow elemental.

  • the cave woman Ayla ( エ イ ラ , Eira ; 65,000,000 BC)

Ayla comes from the Stone Age of Chrono Trigger and is the leader of her tribe. Despite her origins, like the others of her time, she has - albeit flawed - an astonishing talent for the language of the heroes. Although she feels great sympathy for Chrono from the start and welcomes him and the rest of the heroes with open arms in order to organize a prehistoric celebration for them of a very special kind, her relationship with her friend and rival Kino, the second highest in her tribe, is greater . When the heroes help them with the conflict between their enemies, the reptile tribe and their tribal leader "Azala", Ayla joins them and lets her muscles speak. In fact, she is one of the strongest and fastest characters on the team, which is why, although she is incapable of magic, a companion of great use.

  • the dark magician Magus ( 魔王 , Maō , dt .: "Demon King"), actually Janus ( ジ ャ キ , Jaki ; 12,000 BC)

Magus is the supposed antagonist of Chrono Trigger and a powerful magician, especially when it comes to shadow magic. He is responsible for the death of Frog's friend Cyrus and for the tragic state of the swordsman himself. In addition to his magic and his psychic powers, which among other things allow him to levitate, he uses a scythe in hand-to-hand combat, which he materializes out of nowhere. When it comes to putting his plan into action, he is ruthless and doesn't care what others think, let alone what happens to them. But in fact he is not the one Chrono and the others are supposed to confront in the end, because it is not he who wants to summon Lavos to extinguish all life, but it is he who wants to destroy Lavos. As “Prince Janus” he was born in the Zhyle Palace of antiquity. But after he was catapulted into the Middle Ages by a pull of time, he subjugated the demons, which is why he became known as the "demon master" (also "Fiendlord" in the NDS version) and under the protection of his servants his plan was high up of his fortress. Magus has the gift of clairvoyance, which is why, as a child in antiquity, he made a sad prediction for one of the heroes and, since he already knew the events of the future, he stood by his mother Queen Zeal, who was obsessed by Lavos, as a masked prophet. The shadow magician is cold and angry, but mainly because he fights for his sister Schala ("Sara" in the Japanese original, which is a very popular name in Square Enix role-playing games), not heartless or selfish. So it's up to Frog to decide his fate.

The group travels through time gates and later with a flying time machine called Epoch ( シ ル バ ー ド , Shirubādo ), also known as "Wings of Time" in the US version, into seven different epochs:

  • Primeval times (65,000,000 BC)

The Stone Age in Chrono Trigger history. As usual, it is ruled by the dinosaurs and the ancestors of modern humans. These are in conflict with the reptite tribe ("Reptites" in the US version), which abhor humans. At this time, the “red star” and extraterrestrial parasite Lavos, which gets its name from the Stone Age people from the words “La” for “fire” and “Vos” for “huge”, lands on the planet and burrows itself.

  • Antiquity (12,000 BC)

A time dominated by magic, in which the people of the planet into the magical "enlightened ones" in the US version in heaven and the "earthbound ones" ("earthbound ones" in the US version) on earth is split. While the earthbound people live very primitive and poor, the kingdom of light souls ruled by Zhyle has a highly developed technology. The wise man, Gaspar, the wise man, Bosh, and the wise man, Belthasar, who help the heroes as best they can, also date from this period. This time is under the great influence of the alien Lavos, whose energy is used by Metamorphos ("Mammon Machine" in the US version).

  • Middle Ages (600 AD)

The first time alien to Chrono, in which the kingdom of Gardia is already established. This time is strongly influenced by Magus, who wants to summon Lavos, whereby the humans and the demons fight each other. This period of time is very important for the heroes, as this is the first time they think about the possible consequences of influencing time and also learn that their enemy is completely different from the one they suspect.

  • Present (1000 AD)

Chronos time in which the story begins. At that time, the Kingdom of Guardia is a thousand years old and being celebrated, as a result of which the young hero meets Marle and the journey that changes everything begins.

  • Disaster: "Day of Lavos" (1999 AD)

The day Lavos breaks out of the earth and devastates it. The consequences are devastating and change the lives of the few who remain forever.

  • Future (2300 AD)

The futuristic world cursed by Lavos. The parasite has buried itself in the earth again below death height ("Death Peak" in the US version) and condemned the rest of its life to hunger and poverty, while it continues to absorb DNA and send its offspring to his future on other planets To follow in footsteps. The people of the future also have to suffer from the rule of the machines, which are controlled by the "mother brain" ("mother brain" in the US version).

  • End of Time (∞ AD)

The endless nothingness that exists beyond all other time periods and is reached by the heroes by traveling together with several people from different times. It serves as a meeting point for them and offers Chrono and his friends the opportunity to access all portals and also to attack Lavos directly. The time suction in antiquity catapulted the time guru Gaspar there, who stood by the heroes with advice and action and gave them the ultimate object he had created: the time egg "Chrono Trigger".
