Production IG ( Japanese 株式会社 プ ロ ダ ク シ ョ ン ・ ア イ ジ ー , Kabushiki-gaisha Purodakushon Aijī , English Production IG, Inc. ) is a Japanese anime production studio based in Tokyo .

history

The studio was founded on December 15, 1987 under the name IG Tatsunoko by Mitsuhisa Ishikawa and Takayuki Goto . The "IG" in the name stands for the initials of the surnames of the two founders, "Tatsunoko" is the name of the studio for which they both previously worked. The company received its current name in 1993, but still in the legal form of a Japanese GmbH ( yūgen gaisha ). In 1998 the legal form was changed to a stock corporation ( kabushiki-gaisha ). In 1995 the subsidiary Xebec was founded.

Production IG consists of ten studios, each responsible for one area, including background drawings, computer graphics and video game development. In March 1997 an offshoot was founded in Los Angeles , and another studio is located in Niigata, Japan .

In 2007 the company merged with the Manga publishing house Mag Garden and formed the joint holding KK IG Port ( 株式会社 IG ポ ー ト , Kabushiki-gaisha IG Pōto ). In 2012, Production IG producer George Wada founded the IG Port subsidiary WIT Studio . In October 2014, under the direction of Production IG producer Katsuji Morishita, another subsidiary called Signal MD is to be founded, which specializes in children's series.

Studio 9 was founded specifically for the production of the television series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex , although Production IG actually only consisted of seven departments at the time. The name, however, was chosen based on the special unit called "Section 9", which the series is about.
