content

The story takes place in an alternate reality in which there is peace on earth but war between two parties continues for the entertainment of the people. So-called kildren fight in war, a genetically modified human caste in the body of teenagers who do not grow up and can only die on the battlefield. The pilot Yuichi Kannami is transferred to the Rostock Iron Works base as a replacement for the fallen pilot Jin-Roh . He only vaguely remembers his past, but the daily routine at the station between occasional bar visits and waiting for emergency orders seems somehow familiar. He befriends other pilots and feels more and more drawn to the commander Kusanagi Suito, who is said to have had an affair with his predecessor. Kannami tries to find out more about Jin-Roh, but repeatedly falls on deaf ears. He is also plagued by existential questions: Who is his creator? Does his existence have a higher purpose? For or against whom is he fighting anyway? Is he a Replicant or a Rebirth? Is his world real or is he just part of a big game? During his missions he is also confronted with the legendary opponent "Teacher" and he makes it his task to get him down from the sky.

Reviews

“It is a story on the verge of permanent standstill, between accepting the here and now and trying to tread unknown paths. […] With a daring interpretational step, in this anime it is not the transfigured look of a person at a computer game and the struggle back into reality, as Ash experiences in Avalon , but the emotional look at artificial intelligences. Bots that don't follow a program like robots, but can perceive themselves as existences in a self-reflective manner. For those who find this explanation too obscure, the story can also be read as a continuation of Jin-Roh . It is the abuse of human beings as tools and thus a criticism of war and destruction. "
