Linkin Park is an American band founded in 1996 (under the name Xero ) in Agoura Hills , Los Angeles County ( California ) , which is mostly assigned to the musical styles of Nu Metal , Alternative Rock , Alternative Metal and Synth Rock . After Chester Bennington joined the band as the lead singer in 1999 , the band initially renamed itself Hybrid Theory and only a short time later Linkin Park.

Already with their debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000, which received several awards and is the fifth best-selling album of the 21st century with over 30 million units worldwide, the band achieved their international breakthrough. In the following years the band released six more studio albums with Meteora (2003), Minutes to Midnight (2007), A Thousand Suns (2010), Living Things (2012), The Hunting Party (2014) and One More Light (2017). With more than 130 million albums and singles sold and two Grammy Awards awarded , Linkin Park is the most commercially successful band of the 21st century.

The band currently consists of five members Mike Shinoda (including singer and rhythm guitarist ), Brad Delson ( lead guitarist ), Dave Farrell ( electric bassist ), Joseph "Joe" Hahn ( DJ ) and Robert "Rob" Bourdon ( drummer ), the all of the founding members of the band. Since the death of lead singer Chester Bennington in July 2017, the band has been on hiatus for an indefinite period. It is currently unknown whether and how the band will continue.

Career

Origin and name change (1996–1999)

In 1991 Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson , who knew each other from Agoura High School in California , attended a concert by the thrash metal band Anthrax , who performed with hip-hop group Public Enemy . This should be the inspiration for starting a band.

Former Hybrid Theory logo before it was renamed Linkin Park

In 1996 Shinoda and Delson formed the band Xero in Los Angeles with drummer Rob Bourdon , their schoolmate . DJ Joe Hahn  - a fellow student of art student Shinoda - later joined the band. Dave Farrell, one of Delson's roommates, temporarily completed the band. The band's first singer was Mark Wakefield, who left the band after recording a demo because they couldn't get a record deal, whereupon they contacted Jeff Blue, the vice-president of the Warner Music Group , Chester Bennington , the previous singer, through Delson's contact the post-grunge band Gray Daze found a replacement. To sing the demo, Bennington locked himself in a small studio for three days, after which he played it to the band over the phone. This convinced the band to include him. In order to fully concentrate on the band, Bennington quit his job and moved with his wife from Arizona to California. After joining in 1999, the band renamed itself Hybrid Theory, which would later become the title of their first album. Due to possible legal problems (there was already another band under this name) a second renaming was made and an agreement was reached on Linkin Park. A little later, Jeff Blue signed the band.

This name goes back to Lincoln Park in Santa Monica , which today has a different name. Due to the fact that there are countless Lincoln Parks in the USA, the band, which was initially unknown nationwide, was often mistaken for a new youth group from the area and thus quickly attracted attention.

The modification of the spelling in Linkin Park was purely pragmatic, because the band wanted to secure a .com domain . This decision was made easier by the fact that Lincoln Park in California is actually pronounced as Linkin Park. The website was registered on May 24, 2000.

First album and quick successes (1999–2002)

The band, still called Hybrid Theory, recorded their first EP in 1999 with the title Hybrid Theory EP , which is now considered a collector's item.

Between March and June 2000 Linkin Park worked on the album Hybrid Theory at NRG Recordings in North Hollywood, after which it was released on October 24, 2000 in the USA. The album was a massive success. In its debut year, it sold 4.8 million copies, which gave the album the title of best-selling album, while singles like One Step Closer and Crawling dominated the charts. Other songs have been used in soundtracks from films such as The Experiment . Hybrid Theory won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for Crawling and was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rock Album. MTV named the album for Best Rock Music Video.

In the course of this, the album made it straight into the Top 20 of the Billboard charts and was gold-plated after just three weeks , selling 15 million copies, more than 500,000 in Germany alone. On the following tour as the opening act for the Deftones , Linkin Park were able to convince in front of a large audience and received favorable reviews.

Resuscitation and Meteora (2002-2004)

In 2002, the band released the album Reanimation , a mainly to Hybrid Theory based remix album . Linkin Park has collaborated on many songs with other musicians and rappers, e.g. B. DJ Babu . The names of the individual songs were derived from the names of their templates. B. from Forgotten the title Frgt / 10 .

In December 2002 the band officially announced that they were working on a new album inspired by the mountainous region of Meteora in Greece. The album continued the alternation between the sung parts of Bennington and the rapped parts of Shinoda and added new elements such as the introduction of the Japanese shakuhachi . The album was released on March 25, 2003, after which it immediately received worldwide recognition.

Meteora sold 811,000 copies in the first week alone, with Celine Dion's album One Heart , released at the same time, selling nearly 400,000 fewer. The singles on the album, e.g. B. Numb , achieved great radio presence. In October 2003 Linkin Park had already sold the album 3 million times.

Side projects (2004–2006)

After the success of Meteora , Linkin Parks members focused on various side projects. Chester Bennington formed the band Dead by Sunrise after writing songs he found too moody for Linkin Park. Mike Shinoda founded Fort Minor in 2004 , after which he released Fort Minor's first album, The Rising Tied , the next year , and worked with Depeche Mode . In 2004 the band worked again with Jay-Z to release the new album Collision Course with him .

At the Grammy Awards 2006 Linkin Park played with Jay-Z Numb / Encore , a song from Collision Course, which was nominated for a Grammy, whereupon Paul McCartney came on stage and added verses from Yesterday .

Minutes to Midnight (2006-2008)

Linkin Park Logo (2007-2010)

In 2006 the band began to work on a new album, for which they chose Rick Rubin as producer. In May, Shinoda suggested that Linkin Park would release a new album that same year, which turned out to be wrong. In September Bennington added that the new album would deviate from the old Nu-Metal style. Warner Bros. Records finally announced that the album Minutes to Midnight would be released on May 15th in the United States.

In August 2006, Linkin Park supported Metallica at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan. They presented the previously unreleased song QWERTY and Reading My Eyes (from the Xero mixtape). To this day, Reading My Eyes is only available via the Linkin Park Underground V6.0 sampler, which is only available to fan club members . The track Qwerty can be found on the underground albums Songs from the Underground and A Decade Underground .

The album Minutes to Midnight was released in Germany on May 11th 2007, with What I've Done a single was released worldwide on May 4th . As announced several times before, the album shows the band having changed a lot of style. The Nu-Metal and crossover elements can only be heard sporadically and the music as a whole is more towards alternative rock . The otherwise characteristic alternating vocals between Bennington and Shinoda's raps has also given way and is only used on one song ( Bleed It Out ). The lyrics of the new songs also deal with current political events, for example the Iraq war is criticized in Hands Held High , the behavior of the US government during Hurricane Katrina is denounced in The Little Things Give You Away , No More Sorrow is directed against George W. Bush .

In the summer of 2007 Linkin Park played as headliners at the Rock am Ring , Rock im Park and the Live Earth concert in Chiba (Japan). A collaboration with Busta Rhymes resulted in the track We Made It , which was released as a promo single for his album Back on My BS , but cannot be heard on the album itself.

A Thousand Suns (2008-2011)

In 2009 Linkin Park released the album Songs from the Underground . This album also included the song QWERTY , which was previously only available to members of the Linkin Park Underground fan club. On May 18, 2009, the single New Divide was released as the theme song for the film Transformers - Die Rache . Linkin Park contributed the song What I've Done to the first Transformers film . For earthquake in Haiti in 2010 Linkin Park headed the title Not Alone Album Download to Donate for.

On September 8, 2010 the album A Thousand Suns , produced again by Rick Rubin and Mike Shinoda, was released. At the beginning of August, the first pre-single was released with The Catalyst . On September 2nd, Linkin Park exclusively sent the song Wretches and Kings to all people who had pre-ordered the album on the official website. In addition, the second single Waiting for the End was announced on September 3, which was to be heard on the radio from September 7.

The fourth single and the theme song for Transformers 3 was Iridescent . They also appeared on July 4th at the iTunes Festival 2011, of which they then released an EP on iTunes. At the gig they also played the song Rolling in the Deep by Adele .

Living Things and Recharged (2011-2013)

In June 2011, Chester Bennington announced that they were working on another, fifth studio album. He told the magazine Kerrang that a new musical style is being sought for that. In his opinion, this could be polarizing.

As with the last two albums, Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns , Rick Rubin is again producer. He said there was significant progress in development compared to the other albums at this point in time. They typically meet once a week to talk about songs the band has developed.

Bennington also revealed to Rolling Stone in July that an 18-month rhythm would be sought for further albums and he would be shocked if no album was released in 2012. New material will continue to be produced, even during tours.

In March 2012, Brad Delson said the album was slated for mid-year. The pre-single Burn It Down was released on April 16, 2012.

On April 15, 2012, Mike Shinoda announced on his blog that the album would be called Living Things . The day after they released the album cover and also announced that the album would be out on June 26th. The album will again address more personal issues. On June 25, the Berlin concert from the Admiralspalast on June 5 was shown in a special broadcast in more than 500 US cinemas.

Living Things kept the electronic sound of its predecessor, but guitars were used more and more and the characteristic metal sound could be heard again. You can also hear more rap and vocal interludes by Mike Shinoda on the album, as well as the striking "Screaming" by Chester Bennington.

The previously published singles were able to build on more of their earlier success.

On September 12, 2013 they announced the release of a remix album called Recharged , which was released in Germany on October 25. It contains remixes of songs from Living Things , as well as the track A Light That Never Comes , which they produced together with DJ Steve Aoki and released as a pre-release. Mike Shinoda said that he did not originally plan to put together a remix album after resuscitation , but that the numerous reinterpretations have now moved the band to do so. The remixes on Recharged range from house - to dubstep - to hip-hop reinterpretations. Her video game LP Recharge was also released on September 12th, which her fans could use to unlock the new single.

The Hunting Party and One More Light (2013-2017)

The Hunting Party was released on June 13, 2014 as the sixth studio album . The Carnivores tour also took place in the summer of 2014 with Thirty Seconds to Mars as co-headliner and AFI . The name is derived from Shinoda's opinion that rock music nowadays has become too “ herbivorous ”, ie too “soft, indeterminate and indifferent”, which he would like to change. Accordingly, the album should also be the "loudest" so far. Above all, the guitars and the drums were intensified. The singer Page Hamilton ( Helmet ) and the two well-known guitarists Daron Malakian ( System of a Down , Scars on Broadway ) and Tom Morello ( Rage Against the Machine ) also provide guest contributions. After Rick Rubin was the last music producer for Linkin Park three times , this time Mike Shinoda produced the album himself.

Bennington (left) and Shinoda in August 2014

The pre-release single Guilty All the Same , which was created together with rapper Rakim , has been available for download since March 7, 2014. The second single Until It's Gone was released on May 6, 2014, and has been available in Germany since May 30. Also Wastelands and Rebellion (feat. Daron Malakian ) published prematurely.

On September 12, 2014 the single Final Masquerade was released in Germany. The single stayed in the charts for nine weeks. It was in the charts for three weeks in Austria (65th place) and Switzerland (64th place).

At the beginning of 2016, the band announced that they had started recording a new studio album. On February 16, 2017, the single Heavy , which was created in collaboration with singer Kiiara , was released. The song is the lead single of the new album One More Light , which was released on May 19, 2017. It stayed in the charts for eight weeks in Austria and six weeks in Switzerland. The songs Battle Symphony and Good Goodbye , in collaboration with Pusha T and Stormzy , were released as lyrics videos. The song Invisible was also released as a lyrics video on May 11, 2017.

On July 20, 2017, singer Chester Bennington was found dead; he had suicide committed. Then the tour for the album One More Light was canceled.

On September 18, 2017, Linkin Park released the music video for One More Light in memory of Chester Bennington. The following text is displayed at the end of the official video:

A tribute concert for Chester Bennington was held on October 28, 2017. Among others, Kiiara , Blink-182 , Korn , Steve Aoki , Sum 41 , System of a Down , Avenged Sevenfold and A Day to Remember took part. The show was broadcast live on YouTube . The song Looking for an Answer premiered during the show. Then, also in memory of Chester Bennington, the live album One More Light Live was released on December 15, 2017. This contains 16 live performances of songs from various albums by the band that were played during the One More Light tour.

Plans after Chester Bennington's death

Mike Shinoda announced in 2018 through various channels (including Twitter ) that the band would continue. He and the other band members have expressed the intention to let the band continue, but it takes time to decide on the future of the band. In February 2019, Shinoda announced in an interview that although they were not explicitly looking for a new singer, Linkin Park is open to working with a new singer, provided that the latter would find and complement the band in a "natural way". Shinoda categorically ruled out a possible tour or individual concerts with a Bennington hologram in 2017. At the end of April 2020 it was announced that the band was working on new pieces.

Musical style

Linkin Park is often assigned to alternative metal or alternative rock or nu metal due to its crossover of rock and metal with hip-hop elements and electronica .

The interplay of the two vocalists Bennington and Shinoda occupies a large space in Linkin Park's music . Bennington acted as lead singer, Shinoda takes on the rap parts and appears for the first time on the third album Minutes to Midnight (2007) as a singer. With this album the band expanded their musical range, raps could only be heard on a few songs.

On the A Thousand Suns that followed in 2010 , Linkin Park increasingly used electronic drum beats, the album is considered to be the turning point for the band towards a more electronica-oriented approach. Living Things is also shaped electronically, but appears to be harder again overall due to other influences.

It wasn't until The Hunting Party , which appeared in 2014, that the music started moving more towards alternative metal.

Success and reception

Linkin Park in Berlin, 2010

Since the turn of the millennium , no other band has had more album top spots in the US than Linkin Park. Linkin Park's steep rise from their debut album, which was released in 2000, was often followed critically by fans and critics.

While Hybrid Theory was still "a successful tightrope act between art and commerce", which made the band interesting for the mainstream as well, due to the "obvious pop appeal and the associated hysteria of pubescent female fans" they left acclaimed performances at Top of the Pops and similar formats allegations that the band was just another commercial product for the mass market did not take long to emerge. A strong presence in youth magazines such as Bravo meant that the music group quickly acquired a "stigma of the NuMetal boy group ".

With Meteora , Linkin Park brought an album onto the market that musically hardly stood out from its predecessor and appeared to be a "play-it-safe copy ... like a calculated product" and was thus once again "commercial like nothing good". laut.de categorized the album as " Fast-Food - Nu-Metal ", which plays into the hands of critics who accused the band of selling out. Other critics see a well-functioning concept, despite the musical similarity, as well as more varied and well-thought-out melodies. In general, the album got a rather positive response and was able to convince most of the critics.

With Minutes to Midnight , the “ingratiation to the pop mainstream was dramatic”. The songs are "beautifully suitable for radio and children's rooms" and the "tracks that are brushed smooth down to the smallest detail" are to be understood as purely "disposable items". Spiegel Online takes up the often heard accusation “dirt because too commercial” with regard to the album from 2007 in such a way that they consider this attack to be justified for the two previous releases. Neider will see "their enemy image confirmed again in Linkin Park, because mass compatibility and authenticity represent a contradiction for many." However, the album is also given a more mature sound. Linkin Park broke away from the emo teen fan and would now make more demanding, more critical and more creative music.

The sell-out accusation keeps coming up with the follow-up albums as well.

Visions explained the band's success by saying that Linkin Park was the band that always most reliably met the needs of their fans. The band's radio rock is characterized by the “hardest soft guitars in the world”.
