MTV Video Music Awards / Viewer's Choice
The Viewer's Choice Award , which was presented from 1984 to 2006, was the only award within the MTV Video Music Awards in which viewers were allowed to have a say. This was initially done via (paid) calls during the live show and was later extended to internet voices and SMS. From 1984 to 1994 the nominations were the same as those for the Video of the Year category . From 1995 there was a separate list of nominations.
In 2006 all categories were fan votes. It was also the last year the award was presented. Instead, from 2008, fans could vote for the best new artist .
Aerosmith won the award four times. Four artists also won both Video of the Year and Viewer's Choice: INXS (with Need You Tonight / Mediate ), Aerosmith (with Cryin ' ), TLC (with Waterfalls ), and Green Day (this one him for two received various videos).
