The Voice Within is the fifth and final single from Christina Aguilera's second studio album Stripped . The song was released in late 2003 and reached number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 , making it Aguilera's eleventh Top 40 hit in the United States . Furthermore, the song reached number nine in the United Kingdom , number three in Switzerland , number seven in Austria , number 13 in Germany and number eight in Australia . The song is mainly due to its black and white - music video known.

The Voice Within was written by Aguilera and Glen Ballard and produced by Ballard. The album version of the song ends almost half a minute earlier and fades this over to the next song I'm OK .

The original version of the song with a length of 4 minutes and 26 seconds is included on the compilation album Totally Hits 2004 .

Aguilera didn't want to release "The Voice Within" as a fifth single. Instead, she wanted to release Impossible , a song also included on the Stripped album and produced by Alicia Keys . Aguilera wanted with the hip-hop song on into the hip-hop scene consolidate this mainly by the rapper Lil 'Kim , who was also involved in the making of this album and rap for Can not Hold Us Down contributed . Aguilera's label RCA Records, however, wanted to release a ballad during the summer of 2003 , like Beautiful before and decided against Impossible .

The song was chosen as the theme song for the film of the same name, The Voice Within .

Music video

The music video was directed by David LaChapelle . The video was shot in a single shot in black and white without editing . The video starts with a close-up of Aguilera's face, then the camera zooms in and shows Aguilera in her underdress sitting on an empty theater stage. Subsequently, she walks through different rooms of the theater and finally leaves it. At the end she lies down on a light box. The camera then pans to the night sky. The music video was filmed in an abandoned theater in downtown Los Angeles .

"The Voice Within '" was Aguilera's eleventh music video on TRL. The music video reached number 1 in the TRL charts. The music video was nominated for three MTV Video Music Awards in 2004 in the categories of Best Female Video , Viewer's Choice and Best Cinematography .
