Back to Basics is the fifth studio album by US singer Christina Aguilera . Musically it moves in the jazz, blues and soul area. It was nominated for the Grammy Award 2007 in the category "Best Singing Album - Pop" (Best Pop Vocal Album) . For Ain't No Other Man , however, she received the Grammy for "Best Female Vocal Performance" (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance) . With her song Candyman Aguilera has been nominated again for the Grammy Award 2008 in the category “ Best Female Pop Vocal Performance ”.

Emergence

Back to Basics is influenced by the music of the 20s, 30s and 40s . Aguilera has worked with various artists for example P. Diddy , whom she announced in a report in the English magazine ELLE , and Steve Winwood , with whom she recorded the title Makes Me Wanna Pray . Christina Aguilera also worked again with Linda Perry , with whom she also recorded the ballad Beautiful . Perry produced the entire second CD. Aguilera originally wanted to work with Scott Storch , who had produced several tracks on the Stripped album with her ( Walk Away , Can't Hold Us Down , Infatuation , Fighter , Loving Me 4 Me , Keep on Singin 'My Song and Underappreciated ), However, this refused. Christina Aguilera recorded the album's tracks in five different studios in the US and UK. Also Mark Ronson worked on Back to Basics . Live instruments were used to record the tracks. In addition, Aguilera experimented with different microphones, for example with the carbon microphone , in order to preserve the clinking and hissing that was on the sound carriers of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

"... creating this kind of sound ... using old microphones to give that old tone ..."

- Aguilera in the bonus video Back to Basics

The clink and noise were used for the beginning of On Our Way and Back in the Day , as well as for the entire song I Got Trouble . The recordings lasted two years.

history

The actual release date of the CD has been pushed back again and again from 2004. The title of the album was published in Rolling Stone magazine in March . In February 2006, three previously unknown songs were auditioned by Christina Aguilera at the MTV TRL Awards. These were Ain't No Other Man , Back to Basics (Intro) , and Candyman .

The first single Ain't No Other Man was released internationally in the summer of 2006. Although MTV and Rolling Stone announced Candyman as their second single, Hurt was released.

On November 28, 2006, Back to Basics was released in a special edition in the USA. On December 12, 2006, Walmart released a special edition entitled Back to Basics & Beyond .

Aguilera released her third single Candyman on February 5, 2007 in the USA and on April 7, 2007 in Europe and Australia . In July 28, 2007 (Oceania and Asia) and July 31, 2007 (Europe), the fourth single Slow Down Baby was released. This single was not released in the US.

success

Germany

In Germany, Back to Basics became Christina Aguilera's first number 1 album, as it topped the chart straight away. Back to Basics was awarded gold in October (100,000 copies sold). Despite the radio hit Hurt and an appearance on Wetten, dass ..? left the German album charts for a week in mid-December. In January 2007, it achieved platinum status for 200,000 units shipped to retailers. On February 2, 2007 it was in the German album charts for the last time. The third single Candyman , which was able to place in the German Top-20, did not help the album to return to the German album charts.

United States

In the US, Aguilera's third English-language album went from 0 to 1 and sold about 350,000 copies in the first week. Aguilera was the first female artist to sell more than 300,000 CDs in 2006. Back to Basics is the sixth fastest-selling album in 2006, only Taking the Long Way by Dixie Chicks , B'Day by Beyoncé , 10,000 Days by Tool , FutureSex / LoveSounds by Justin Timberlake and Me and My Gang by Rascal Flatts sold more often in the first week. On November 17, 2006, Back to Basics was officially certified platinum by Billboard , representing over 1 million copies sold. On July 6th, Back to Basics was awarded double platinum.

Single information

Ain't No Other Man

The song was written by Aguilera himself and produced by DJ Premier and Charles Roane. On June 20, 2006, the song could be heard for the first time on iTunes . As of June 21, 2006, the video, which was shot from May 1 to May 3, 2006 in Los Angeles , was played by MTV . In Germany the video had its German premiere on VIVA in the VIVA Live! . The title won in the category Best Female Pop Vocal Performance the Grammy Award of 2007.

Hurt

Hurt was officially confirmed as the next single by BMG in late August 2006 . The song on the second disc was written by Aguilera, Perry and Ronson and was released on November 10, 2006. Christina Aguilera sang the song live for the first time on August 31, 2006 at the MTV Video Music Awards . The video was shot on September 23, 2006. Christina Aguilera also appeared in Wetten, dass ..? with hurt on. The video, which took five days to shoot, celebrated its German premiere on the ProSieben TV channel on the night of October 20, 2006 at around 0:30 after its world premiere on October 15, 2006 in Great Britain. Aguilera directed the video clip herself. It was able to position itself successfully internationally. It was gold-plated in the US, Australia, Belgium, Germany and Austria, and it was awarded platinum in the UK.

Candyman

Christina Aguilera officially confirmed Candyman as her third single on New Year's Eve 2006 in the USA . Originally Candyman was supposed to be released as the second single, but was postponed because it was very similar to the previous single Ain't No Other Man in music and text. It was gold-plated in the US and platinum in Australia. The video was shot on January 28, 2007, and as with Hurt , Aguilera directed it herself. Christina Aguilera and Linda Perry were inspired to make Candyman by the Andrews Sisters song Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (which was released in 1941) . The video for this title shows Aguilera in all three roles of the trio, performing with red, blonde and black hair (a tribute to the Andrews Sisters). The video premiered on February 22, 2007 on MTV . Candyman was the first track recorded for the album.

Slow down baby

Slow Down Baby was released as the final fourth single by Back to Basics on July 31st in Australia / Oceania and Asia. It is Aguilera's first single that was not released in the USA. To Slow Down Baby no video was filmed.

Oh mother

On October 8th 2007 Oh Mother was released for the European radio stations, whereby it has already reached high chart positions in the airplay charts of some European countries. Oh Mother is the fourth and final single in Europe. In Germany it was published on November 23. Like Slow Down Baby , Oh Mother did not appear in the US. The song "Oh Mother" is about the mistreatment she experienced by her father. The video for the single was taken from the DVD Back to Basics - Live and Down Under and released in Germany on November 8th ( MTV ). For Oh Mother , the piano part of the song "Vois sur ton chemin", from the film The Children of Monsieur Mathieu , was partially taken over.

subjects

In her album Back to Basics, Aguilera addresses various topics that often relate to the period of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Some subjects are dealt with in one title, others in several titles. Christina Aguilera deals particularly with the search for or finding of great love . The topic of the circus and the statement that she has become good is also discussed.

Statements and messages

In her song Still Dirrty , Aguilera responds to media reports that claimed she had become good. This is how Aguilera sings:

“If you see me walking down the street or in the pages of your magazine… They saying I'm looking like a lady. They saying that love is going to change me. "

“When you see me walking down the street or on the pages of your magazine ... they say I look like a lady. They say that love will change me. "

- Aguilera in the song Still Dirrty

In addition, the title is an allusion to their title Dirrty , whose video was banned in Thailand and was not played by many broadcasters in the USA. The topic of love is also touched on in Still Dirrty , as is the sexuality of women, because Aguilera asks in her song:

“Why is a woman's sexuality always under so much scrutiny? Why can't she do exactly as she please without being called a million things? ”

“Why is women's sexuality always under such observation? Why can't a woman do what she wants without being called by millions of dirty names? "

- Aguilera in the song Still Dirrty

Aguilera thanks her fans in Thank You (Dedication to Fans) on her album . So she dedicates the entire song to them. In some parts of the song you can hear parts of her debut single Genie in a Bottle , but also recorded fans thanking Christina Aguilera. In the song Aguilera shows that her fans have stuck to her.

The eighth title of the first CD, FUSS (for " F uck U S cott S torch") is Scott Storch . Storch was the producer and co-writer of several songs for Aguilera Stripped's previous album and was also supposed to write titles for Back to Basics , but declined because Aguilera refused to let him fly in on a private plane.

circus

The circus theme is covered in the songs Enter the Circus and Welcome , but the circus also plays a role in Hurt's video . In Enter the Circus, a male voice is promoting a show in a circus. Aguilera also advertises a show in Welcome with the words:

“Welcome to the greatest show. Greatest show on earth. You've never seen before. "

“Welcome to the biggest show. The greatest show on earth. You have never seen anything like this before. "

- Aguilera in the song Welcome

In the last half minute of Welcome is circus music used.

In Hurt's music video, part of Enter the Circus was used for the opening sequence . The starting sequence is black and white. In the video you can see typical things that are common for a circus show, for example a dressage with an elephant that Aguilera does, but also jugglers and clowns.

The album was released as a double CD and in a second edition with an additional DVD. The first CD was produced by different producers, the second CD by Linda Perry. The DVD contains three live performances from the concert at Koko in London.
